Dangote Refinery Facts: Size and Capacity

Dangote Petroleum Refinery is widely described as the world’s largest single-train refinery, with a designed processing capacity of 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day. It sits on a roughly 6,180-acre site in the Lekki Free Zone (Ibeju-Lekki), Lagos State, Nigeria — big enough that industry press has compared its footprint to a small city.

The refinery is supplied in part by a subsea pipeline network reported at around 1,100 kilometres, built specifically to move crude to the facility, alongside deep-water port infrastructure capable of handling very large crude carriers.

Dangote Refinery Timeline: Key Milestones

1. It was first announced in 2013 as a privately funded Dangote Group project.

2. It was officially commissioned on May 22, 2023, after a construction period marked by rising costs, commonly cited around $19–20 billion.

3. It began processing crude oil in January 2024.

4. It started producing petrol (PMS) in September 2024.

5. In February 2026, the company announced it had reached its full designed capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, following optimization of its crude distillation and petrol production units.

6. Nigeria’s state-owned NNPC holds a 20% equity stake in the refinery, approved by the Federal Executive Council in 2021 — a stake that exists independently of any new shares being offered in the planned IPO.

Lesser-Known Dangote Refinery Facts

7. In October 2025, founder Aliko Dangote announced plans to expand the refinery’s capacity further, to a reported 1.4 million barrels per day, alongside new petrochemical investments — a project that, if realized, would be a multi-year undertaking separate from the current IPO process.

8. The refinery’s stated strategic goal is to end Nigeria’s long-standing reliance on imported refined fuel, and potentially position the country as a net exporter of refined products.

9. As of this writing, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has filed an IPO application with Nigeria’s SEC, but the refinery’s construction and operating history is a separate, already-verified track record from the IPO’s still-developing regulatory process.

10. Despite the refinery’s scale, comprehensive audited revenue and profit figures for the business have not yet been made public — that level of detail is expected only once an official IPO prospectus is published.
