FX Risk: What Happens to Your Returns When the Naira Moves?

If you’re investing in naira-denominated shares from outside Nigeria, including a potential future Dangote IPO, your actual return depends on two factors: how the shares perform in naira terms and how the naira moves against your home currency. This second factor, foreign exchange (FX) risk, can meaningfully change your real-world outcome.

Here’s a simplified example of the mechanic (not a prediction, just an illustration of the math): if a naira-denominated stock rises 20% in naira terms over a year, but the naira weakens 20% against the dollar over that same period, a dollar-based investor’s actual return, once converted back to dollars, would be roughly flat, the share price gain and the currency loss largely offset each other. The reverse is also true: a modest naira-denominated gain combined with the naira strengthening against your home currency could boost your real return beyond what the naira share price alone suggests.

The Nigerian naira has experienced significant volatility in recent years, including periods of substantial depreciation against major currencies, tied to Nigeria’s foreign exchange policy changes and broader economic conditions. This history means FX risk isn’t a theoretical concern for NGX investors from abroad; it’s been a material factor in actual historical returns for foreign holders of Nigerian equities.

A few practical implications: dividends, if paid in naira, are also subject to this same conversion risk when you eventually move that money back to your home currency. And because currency movements can be sharp and hard to predict, some diaspora and foreign investors choose to think of NGX investments as a longer-term allocation, partly to ride out short-term currency volatility, rather than a short-term trade. However, this is a general framing, not personalized advice for your specific situation and risk tolerance.

Whatever your approach, it’s worth factoring naira/home-currency volatility into your expectations before investing, rather than evaluating a potential Dangote IPO purely on its naira share price performance.
