How Do You Value an Oil Refinery? A Beginner’s Breakdown

The Core Inputs to Refinery Valuation
Valuing a refinery starts with a few core inputs: designed processing capacity and complexity (how many products it can make, and to what standard), actual utilization (output relative to design capacity), and crack spreads — the margin between what a refinery pays for crude and what it earns selling refined products. Beyond that, analysts weigh debt load (since equity holders are paid after lenders), geographic market position, and export potential.
Applying This to Dangote’s Real 2026 Numbers
Dangote’s refinery gives us an unusually concrete case study, because real transactions have already priced it. Capacity: 650,000 barrels per day, reportedly reached in full in February 2026. Utilization: strong enough that the plant became Europe’s largest jet fuel supplier in June–July 2026 amid Iran-war-related market disruption — a genuine demand signal, though one tied to a specific, possibly temporary event. Debt: a $4 billion syndicated loan signed in March 2026 (31 lenders, Afreximbank underwriting $2.5 billion of it) sits alongside the original roughly $20 billion construction cost, meaning a meaningful share of future cash flow will service debt before reaching shareholders. Transacted price: the July 2026 private placement ($2.5 billion for about 6% of the company) implies a roughly $40 billion valuation — a real, if private, market-clearing price, distinct from the higher $50 billion figure that remains a target rather than a transaction.
What’s Still Missing From the Full Picture
What we still don’t have is the piece that ultimately matters most for a public equity valuation: audited revenue, cost, and profit figures. Private placement pricing reflects sophisticated institutional investors’ willingness to pay for a stake — a meaningful signal, but not the same as a fully disclosed financial statement. That will only arrive with the company’s SEC-approved prospectus, expected around September 2026, which is the point at which a genuinely complete valuation picture — capacity, utilization, margins, debt, and audited earnings together — finally becomes possible.
It is worth being explicit about one limitation of this framework: none of these inputs, on their own, tell you what price you should be willing to pay. A refinery can be genuinely well-run, well-utilized, and strategically positioned, and still be a poor investment if the offer price already reflects all of that good news and more. Valuation discipline means comparing the eventual confirmed offer price against these fundamentals, not simply confirming that the fundamentals sound impressive in isolation.
It’s also worth remembering that valuation methods analysts use for refineries (comparable transaction multiples, discounted cash flow models, or replacement-cost approaches) can each produce meaningfully different answers for the same asset — which is part of why the reported $39–50 billion range for Dangote is best understood as a band of plausible outcomes rather than a single precise figure with one correct answer.
