How to Calculate Dangote Oil Refinery’s Valuation

Understanding what makes a refinery valuable helps you make sense of the wide valuation estimates floating around for Dangote’s IPO. Here are the main factors analysts typically consider when valuing a refinery, in general terms.

Refining capacity and complexity: A refinery’s designed processing capacity (for Dangote, 650,000 barrels per day) is a starting reference point, but complexity matters too; how many different products a refinery can produce, and to what quality standards, affects its value per barrel of capacity. More complex refineries that can process varied crude grades into higher-value products generally command higher valuations than simpler ones.

Utilization rate: A refinery’s actual output relative to its designed capacity matters enormously. A plant running consistently near full capacity, as Dangote’s has reportedly done since reaching 650,000 bpd in February 2026, generates more revenue and is generally valued more favorably than one running below capacity.

Crack spreads and margins: Refineries make money on the difference between what they pay for crude oil and what they can sell refined products for, commonly called the crack spread or refining margin. This is heavily influenced by global oil and refined product prices, which fluctuate constantly and are outside any single refinery’s control.

Geographic and market position: A refinery serving a large domestic market with limited existing refining capacity, like Nigeria (which has relied heavily on imported fuel), can command a valuation premium tied to import substitution and reduced logistics costs, alongside any export potential.

Debt and capital structure: A refinery’s valuation to public shareholders also depends on how much debt was used to build it, since equity holders are paid after debt holders, higher leverage can reduce the value attributable to equity even if the underlying asset is valuable.

For Dangote specifically, none of these inputs have been officially disclosed in detail yet; that level of data will only be available once an audited prospectus is published, which is why current valuation estimates ($39–50 billion, commonly cited) remain broad ranges rather than a settled figure.
