What Are the Biggest Risks of Investing in Africa?

What Makes African Investments Risky?

The biggest risks of investing in African markets include currency depreciation, limited liquidity, inflation, political uncertainty, regulatory changes, company-specific risk, and difficulties with international capital transfers.

These risks are not uniform across the continent.

South Africa’s securities market, for example, has different liquidity, currency, and institutional characteristics from smaller exchanges such as Malawi’s.

Similarly, the financial risks associated with government bonds differ from those of technology startups or publicly listed banks.

Understanding these differences is essential for building an investment strategy.

1. Currency Risk

Currency movements are among the most significant considerations for international investors.

African equities are generally priced in local currencies, including the Nigerian naira, Kenyan shilling, Ghanaian cedi, and South African rand.

Suppose a share portfolio increases by 25% in local-currency terms but the currency loses 20% of its value against the dollar.

The dollar-denominated return becomes: 1.25 x 0.80 – 1 = 0%

Despite the stock market gain, the foreign investor earns no dollar return before fees.

Currency analysis is therefore essential when evaluating African investment performance.

2. Liquidity Risk

Liquidity risk arises when investors cannot sell securities quickly without materially affecting their prices.

According to the OECD Africa Capital Markets Report 2025, nine of 14 African exchanges studied recorded annual turnover ratios below 5%.

Lower trading activity can produce wider bid-ask spreads and longer execution times.

Investors should review a company’s trading volume before purchasing a large position.

3. Political and Regulatory Risk

Government decisions can directly affect financial markets.

Changes in taxation, banking regulations, foreign investment restrictions, subsidy policies, or capital controls may alter business profitability and investor returns.

Regulatory reforms can also create opportunities through improved transparency and stronger financial supervision.

Investors should therefore follow developments from relevant central banks, securities regulators, and finance ministries.

4. Inflation and Interest-Rate Risk

High inflation reduces purchasing power and can increase business costs.

Central banks may respond by raising interest rates, potentially increasing corporate borrowing costs and reducing the attractiveness of equities relative to fixed-income investments.

Bond investors face additional interest-rate risk because the market value of existing fixed-rate bonds generally declines when prevailing yields rise.

Inflation can also erode the real value of bond interest payments.

5. Corporate Governance Risk

Poor financial reporting, weak internal controls, related-party transactions, and ineffective oversight can increase investment risk.

Publicly traded businesses are subject to reporting and governance requirements, but enforcement and disclosure practices vary.

Investors should examine audited financial statements, board composition, shareholder structure, debt, and the quality of earnings.

6. Concentration Risk

Many smaller African stock markets are dominated by a limited number of large companies or sectors.

For example, banking and telecommunications companies may account for a significant portion of local exchange activity.

An investor holding several stocks from the same industry may appear diversified while remaining exposed to similar economic risks.

Diversification should therefore consider sectors, countries, and currencies.

7. Repatriation Risk

Even when an investment is profitable, converting proceeds into foreign currency can be challenging under certain market conditions.

Foreign exchange shortages, banking procedures, and changes in regulations may delay transfers.

Investors should establish the applicable withdrawal procedures before transferring capital.

How Can Investors Manage These Risks?

Risk management begins with choosing legitimate, authorized intermediaries and understanding the assets being purchased.

Investors can reduce concentration risk by diversifying, limit liquidity exposure by considering trading volumes, and manage currency exposure by matching investments to their future spending needs.

Maintaining an appropriate investment horizon is also important.

Research can help identify financially stronger companies, although it cannot eliminate market losses.

Are African Markets Too Risky?

Not necessarily.

The African Development Bank estimates that Africa’s economy grew by 4.4% in 2025 and projects 4.2% growth in 2026.

These figures support the continent’s long-term economic relevance, but economic growth does not guarantee attractive stock returns.

The appropriate question is whether the expected return on a particular investment compensates investors for the risks involved.

The bottom line: African investments involve meaningful risks, but these can be measured, evaluated, and managed. Investors should focus on individual securities, currency exposure, financial regulation, and portfolio construction instead of making broad assumptions about the entire continent.
