Who Is Aliko Dangote? Africa’s Richest Man, Explained

Aliko Dangote: Founder of Africa’s Largest Industrial Conglomerate

Aliko Dangote is a Nigerian businessman widely described as Africa’s richest person, and the founder, chairman, and president of Dangote Group — a conglomerate spanning cement, sugar, salt, flour, fertilizer, and, most recently, petroleum refining and petrochemicals. As with any billionaire’s net worth, published estimates (commonly cited in the low-to-mid $30 billion range by outlets like Reuters, though figures vary and shift constantly) should be checked against a live tracker like Forbes or Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index rather than treated as fixed — these estimates move with Dangote Cement’s share price and analysts’ valuation of his stake in the still-private refinery.

Dangote’s Stake in the Refinery, and the NNPC Dispute

Through Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote holds roughly 92.75% of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals FZE. Nigeria’s state-owned NNPC holds the remaining 7.25%, a stake it acquired in 2021 for about $1 billion — short of the 20% originally envisioned in that deal, reportedly because NNPC never completed payment for the full amount. According to reporting in 2026, Dangote has since publicly rejected fresh attempts by NNPC to purchase additional shares in the refinery, saying he’d rather reserve the remaining equity for ordinary Nigerians through the planned IPO — a decision he discussed publicly in an interview with Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norway’s sovereign wealth fund.

Why Dangote’s Role Matters for the IPO

As majority owner, chairman of the refining business, and its most visible public spokesperson, Dangote’s statements — about the IPO’s “people’s IPO” framing, the dollar dividend proposal, and expansion plans toward 1.4 million barrels per day — carry significant weight in how the market is pricing the eventual offer. But it’s worth separating his personal statements and ambitions from the company’s confirmed, regulator-reviewed disclosures: the former shapes market expectations, while the latter, published in an SEC-approved prospectus, is what will actually govern the investment.

Day-to-day operational leadership of the refining business now sits with CEO David Bird, who took the role in July 2025 after previously running Oman’s Duqm refinery as CEO of OQ8. Dangote remains chairman of the refining business and continues as CEO of the wider Dangote Group, but Bird has been the primary public voice on IPO-specific details in interviews with Reuters, including the retail-first framing and the three-year timeline before any foreign listing is considered. It is worth treating Bird’s operational commentary and Dangote’s ownership-level statements as complementary but distinct: one describes how the company will be run day to day, the other describes who controls it and why.

For investors specifically evaluating whether to participate in the refinery’s IPO, Dangote’s personal track record running Dangote Cement into one of Africa’s largest listed companies is a reasonable, if imperfect, reference point for his execution capability — though it’s worth remembering that cement manufacturing and oil refining are different businesses with different risk profiles.
