Why the Dangote Refinery IPO Could Be Africa’s Biggest Listing Ever

The Scale Behind the “Biggest Ever” Claim

The Dangote Refinery IPO is frequently described as a potential record-setter for African capital markets, and the underlying scale numbers explain why. The refinery itself is described as the world’s largest single-train facility, with a designed capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, built at a reported cost commonly cited around $19–20 billion. Reported valuation estimates for the company ahead of its IPO have ranged from roughly $39 billion to $50 billion — figures that, if reflected in the eventual offer, would dwarf prior African listings.

How It Would Compare to Past Records

For context, Safaricom’s 2008 IPO in Kenya — long considered one of Africa’s biggest — raised about $800 million. Airtel Africa’s 2019 dual listing on the LSE and NGX raised roughly $750 million. If Dangote’s refinery IPO proceeds anywhere near its reported valuation range, selling a reported up to 10% of the company, it could raise proceeds well into the billions of dollars, several times larger than either of those prior benchmarks.

What Would Need to Happen for It to Actually Set the Record

None of this is guaranteed until Nigeria’s SEC approves an official prospectus confirming the actual offer size, price, and terms. As of this writing, the company has only filed its application; no prospectus, confirmed valuation, or listing date has been formally approved, and founder Aliko Dangote’s publicly stated September 2026 target has not yet been confirmed by the regulator.

If the deal proceeds close to currently reported figures, it would very plausibly become Africa’s largest-ever IPO by capital raised — but that outcome depends entirely on official terms that don’t exist publicly yet.
