Airtel Money Sets $7B Valuation for London Stock Market Debut

BREAKING NEWSOctober 2, 2026 at 7:43 AM UTC

TLDR

  • Airtel Money has set a $7 billion valuation for its planned London stock market debut, with trading expected on October 14.
  • Existing shareholders plan to sell 270 million shares at £1.96 each, valuing the business at £5.3 billion, or $7 billion.
  • This valuation is below earlier market expectations, but establishes a public market value for the African mobile payments network.

Airtel Money, a mobile payments business operating across Africa, has set a $7 billion valuation for its planned debut on the London stock market. The company, a unit of Airtel Africa, expects admission to trading on October 14. This move will allow existing shareholders to sell part of their holdings in one of the continent's largest fintech operations.

The planned offering is priced at £1.96 per share, which values the business at approximately £5.3 billion, or $7 billion. Existing investors intend to sell 270 million shares at this price, a transaction worth about £529 million. Importantly, Airtel Money itself will not receive any proceeds from the sale of these existing shares.

This $7 billion valuation is below earlier market expectations, which had discussed a range of £6 billion to £6.7 billion. Beyond the initial 270 million shares, up to 27 million additional shares could be sold through an option designed to support post-offer trading. Airtel Money currently serves over 53 million monthly active customers across 13 African markets, facilitating money transfers and everyday payments via mobile phones.

The flotation provides a mechanism for existing shareholders to monetize part of their investments while establishing a public market value for the African payments business. Parent company Airtel Africa does not expect to sell shares in the main offer, intending to remain a long-term strategic shareholder. This listing will also offer international investors a clear valuation of a significant African mobile money network.

Airtel Africa anticipates that roughly 16.5% of Airtel Money’s shares will be publicly held after the offer, potentially rising to about 17.5% if all additional shares are sold. The payments company was developed within Airtel Africa, which is part of the broader telecoms business associated with Indian billionaire Sunil Bharti Mittal. Gopal Vittal currently chairs Airtel Africa, which is a major shareholder in its mobile money unit.

Points clés à retenir

Airtel Money's $7 billion valuation for its London stock market debut represents a pivotal moment for African fintech, even though it falls below earlier market expectations that had discussed a valuation range of £6 billion to £6.7 billion. This adjusted pricing suggests a more measured investor sentiment, moving from speculative market reporting to a firm offer price. The listing is primarily a liquidity event for existing shareholders, enabling them to sell a portion of their holdings and establish a publicly traded value for the mobile payments business. Airtel Money itself will not receive proceeds from this sale. For Africa, the listing is significant as it provides a concrete valuation benchmark for a large-scale mobile money operation, highlighting how international investors assess the potential of digital payment solutions on the continent. With over 53 million monthly active customers across 13 African markets, Airtel Money underscores the critical role of mobile money in fostering financial inclusion, particularly where access to traditional banking services is limited. The outcome of this flotation will offer valuable insights into global investor confidence in African tech and its capacity to drive economic participation.
