TLDR

  • Airtel Nigeria generated $1.01 billion in revenue between April and September 2026, a first since 2022 for the same period.
  • Its mobile money unit, SmartCash PSB, recorded its highest-ever half-year revenue of $10 million, growing 150%.
  • The performance reflects macroeconomic improvements and increased data usage, though rising fuel costs pressure margins.

Airtel Nigeria generated $1.01 billion in revenue between April and September 2026, the first time since 2022 for the same period. Its mobile money subsidiary, SmartCash PSB, also recorded its highest-ever half-year revenue of $10 million. This performance signals a recovery for the Nigerian unit of Airtel Africa.

The improved results follow currency volatility that impacted earnings after the naira's 2023 devaluation. Since 2025, a more stable naira and regulatory approvals for market-reflective telecom tariffs have supported sector-wide revenue growth. Airtel Africa attributed higher reported currency growth to the naira's appreciation from NGN/USD 1,553 to NGN/USD 1,360, complemented by increased data consumption. Smartphone penetration reached 56.8%, with monthly smartphone data usage per customer rising to 16.7GB.

Airtel Nigeria's revenue growth of 44.62% boosted its average revenue per user by 27.27%. SmartCash PSB's revenue surged 150% to $10 million, while its customer base expanded 110% to 4.2 million. This Nigerian performance contributed to Airtel Africa's overall revenue, rising 28.20% to $3.82 billion, and group profit, increasing 20.21% to $452 million.

These results demonstrate Airtel Nigeria's resilience and recovery from macroeconomic challenges, signaling positively for investors. SmartCash PSB's growth suggests Airtel Nigeria's strategy to build a competitive mobile money business is gaining traction. This expansion aligns with Nigerian telecom operators' broader efforts to capture a larger share of the digital financial services market. However, rising operating costs, particularly a doubling of fuel prices in Nigeria, are pressuring Airtel Africa's margins.

Airtel Africa stated its cost efficiency program helped mitigate these pressures, limiting sequential margin decline to approximately 130 basis points. Operating free cash flow increased 28.2% to $409 million, driven by strong underlying EBITDA growth despite higher capital expenditure. SmartCash PSB's strategy, featuring a zero-fee banking model and 15% annual interest on savings, aims to attract users. Despite its rapid growth, SmartCash still trails established players like OPay, which generated $467.06 million in revenue in the first half of 2026.

Points clés à retenir

Airtel Nigeria's recent financial performance underscores a broader trend of recovery and strategic diversification within Nigeria's telecommunications sector, particularly in digital financial services. The company's return to over $1 billion in half-year revenue, coupled with SmartCash PSB's significant growth, reflects improved macroeconomic conditions since 2025, including a more stable naira and market-reflective telecom tariffs. This currency stability, alongside increased smartphone penetration and data usage, has been crucial for revenue growth, as evidenced by Airtel Africa's comments on the naira's appreciation. However, the sector faces ongoing challenges, such as rising operating costs from geopolitical developments doubling fuel prices, which pressure margins despite cost efficiency programs. The aggressive expansion of mobile money subsidiaries like SmartCash PSB, offering zero-fee models and attractive interest rates, highlights telecom operators' determination to capture a larger share of Nigeria's digital financial services market. While SmartCash PSB's 150% revenue growth is impressive, it remains a smaller player compared to MTN Nigeria's MoMo PSB, which recently upgraded its fintech infrastructure, and market leader OPay, which reported significantly higher revenues. This competitive landscape suggests that while the potential for growth in mobile money is substantial, achieving market dominance will require sustained innovation and strategic investment from all players.
