AMN inks satellite internet deal with Starlink
Africa Mobile Networks (AMN) has entered into a commercial agreement to use Starlink, SpaceX's constellation of low Earth orbit satellites.
The company plans to connect the stations base of its mobile network to Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency services, to serve even the most remote and rural communities in the world.
AMN also plans to deploy Starlink terminals at sites in Nigeria, as part of a larger project to connect 700 additional rural communities before the end of the year.

The World Bank estimates that only 29% of people in sub-Saharan Africa had access to the internet in 2020. Whereas it is often uneconomical to lay cables or build telecom towers in remote parts of Africa, satellite internet providers can cover these areas at no extra cost after serving their main customers. Hence, Starlink’s promise of high-speed and low-latency connectivity could provide a big boost to the region’s economic activity, if affordable pricing points can be found.
