BRVM Main Index Crosses 500P, Market Cap Tops XOF 20T in Historic Week

Daba Finance/BRVM Main Index Crosses 500P, Market Cap Tops XOF 20T in Historic Week
BREAKING NEWSAugust 23, 2026 at 6:51 PM UTC

TLDR

  • BRVM Composite reached record high of 529.15 points, exceeding 500 for the first time, with listed shares hitting XOF 20.41 trillion.
  • Various indices experienced gains, such as BRVM Prestige by 7.82% and BRVM 30 by 7.63%, indicating a significant uptrend.
  • Leading sectors included utilities (19.93% gain) and telecommunications (15.89% increase), driven by key players like CIE Côte d’Ivoire and Orange Côte d’Ivoire.

The BRVM Composite crossed 500 points for the first time in its history, ending the week at 529.15 after gaining 6.33%. The value of listed shares also passed XOF 20 trillion for the first time ever, reaching XOF 20.41 trillion. The 2 milestones came in the week ended August 21 as buying spread across several of the exchange’s largest stocks.

Other indices also advanced. The BRVM Prestige rose 7.82% to 196.68 points and the BRVM 30 gained 7.63% to 255.75. The BRVM Principal increased 1.70% to 382.84. Trading value climbed 36.15% to XOF 15.29 billion from XOF 11.23 billion a week earlier.

Utilities led sectors with a 19.93% gain, driven by CIE Côte d’Ivoire, while telecommunications rose 15.89% as Orange Côte d’Ivoire and Sonatel Senegal reached record prices. Consumer discretionary stocks gained 5%, energy rose 7.65% and financial services added 1.42%. Consumer staples fell 1.28%.

CIE led weekly gains, rising 25.11% to XOF 6,900 after reaching XOF 7,190 during the week. Uniwax climbed 23.25% to XOF 2,465, SAPH gained 17.93% to XOF 9,440, Orange Côte d’Ivoire rose 16.75% to XOF 21,015 and Sonatel increased 15.92% to XOF 36,980. Orange and Sonatel both reached record prices.

Some stocks moved in the other direction after earlier gains. SICOR fell 14.19% to XOF 8,650 after 5 weeks of increases. Unilever dropped 10% to XOF 52,200 and Sucrivoire lost 7.65% to XOF 3,380. BICICI Benin declined 3.53% to XOF 8,200, while Ecobank Transnational fell 2.94% to XOF 66.

Points clés à retenir

The move above 500 points matters because it came with higher market value, more trading and gains in companies that carry weight in the BRVM indices. CIE, Orange Côte d’Ivoire and Sonatel were among the main drivers, which means the rally was supported by utilities and telecommunications rather than only stocks with low trading volumes. That helps explain why the BRVM 30 rose 7.63% in a week and why market capitalization moved above XOF 20 trillion. But the size of some individual moves also raises the question of how much future growth is already reflected in prices. CIE has gained 192.37% since the start of 2026, while Orange Côte d’Ivoire is up 47.47%. Uniwax has almost doubled since the start of July, and Sonatel reached XOF 36,980 after breaking through XOF 32,000 during the week. At the same time, SICOR’s 14.19% fall after 5 weeks of gains shows how fast profit-taking can follow a rally. Trading value of XOF 15.29 billion remains small compared with XOF 20.41 trillion of market capitalization. The next test is whether earnings, dividends and trading demand can support these prices as the BRVM moves into territory it has not reached before.
