TLDR

  • The Central Bank of Nigeria will offer N800 billion in Treasury Bills on October 28, 2026.
  • This auction follows N2.813 trillion in projected inflows into the financial system this week.
  • Banking system liquidity reached N6.98 trillion, potentially supporting demand for government securities.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), acting on behalf of the Debt Management Office (DMO), will offer N800 billion in Nigerian Treasury Bills (NTBs) on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. This auction occurs as banks' placements at the CBN’s Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) reached N6.98 trillion on Tuesday, October 27. The offering is detailed in the CBN’s invitation to tender and liquidity data from the Financial Markets Dealers Association (FMDA).

The N800 billion Treasury Bills offer is structured across three tenors, with the 364-day instrument comprising the largest share at N600 billion, or 75% of the total. These securities will be issued through a Dutch auction process. The auction on October 28 coincides with N130.72 billion in maturing Treasury Bills, with settlement scheduled for the following day, October 29.

The financial system is projected to receive N2.813 trillion in inflows this week, according to the FMDA. This substantial liquidity follows the settlement of N2.132 trillion in Open Market Operation (OMO) maturities and N53.493 billion in primary market maturities on Tuesday. Additionally, corporate bond coupon payments are expected to contribute N10.92 billion. System liquidity had already increased by 10.39% week-on-week to N6.936 trillion by the week ended October 23.

The significant inflows from OMO maturities and maturing Treasury Bills are expected to support demand for government securities. The repayment of N130.72 billion in maturing Treasury Bills will return funds to investors and financial institutions, potentially boosting reinvestment demand during the auction. Strong demand could provide the DMO with room to lower stop rates further, though higher investor yield expectations could limit this downward pressure.

This auction will serve as a test for the continued strong demand for government securities amidst elevated banking-system liquidity and substantial expected maturities. The final allotment and stop rates will depend on actual subscriptions received and the CBN’s broader liquidity-management operations. Notably, OMO maturities this week are N341 billion higher than the N2.067 trillion recorded in the preceding week, further influencing liquidity conditions.

Points clés à retenir

The Central Bank of Nigeria's N800 billion Treasury Bills auction on October 28, 2026, is a significant event set against a backdrop of substantial liquidity within the Nigerian financial system. With banks holding N6.98 trillion at the CBN's Standing Deposit Facility and N2.813 trillion in inflows projected for the week, the auction provides a crucial opportunity for the Debt Management Office to manage government borrowing. The liquidity surge is largely driven by N2.132 trillion in Open Market Operation maturities and N53.493 billion in primary market maturities, alongside N10.92 billion in corporate bond coupon payments. This influx of funds, coupled with N130.72 billion in maturing Treasury Bills coinciding with the auction, is expected to fuel strong demand for the government securities, particularly the N600 billion 364-day tenor which accounts for 75% of the offer. Demand for one-year Treasury Bills has remained robust in recent auctions, even as stop rates have declined from earlier highs, suggesting a continued appetite for government debt. The auction will test whether this elevated liquidity translates into further lower stop rates for the government, as strong investor interest could empower the DMO to reduce borrowing costs. However, the final outcome remains contingent on actual subscription levels and the CBN's broader liquidity management strategies, which could influence investor yield expectations and broader liquidity conditions beyond this specific auction.
