Circle Internet Group, the NYSE-listed issuer of the dollar-backed USDC stablecoin, has appointed Gillian Darko as its Vice President and Head of Africa. Darko, a former Yellow Card executive, announced her new role on Monday via a LinkedIn post. This appointment deepens Circle's strategic push into Africa's expanding digital payments market. She expressed enthusiasm for the ecosystem, stablecoins, and the future of digital finance on the continent.
In her new role, Darko will be tasked with expanding USDC's reach across African payment networks. She will also navigate the complex regulatory requirements that could determine how widely foreign-issued stablecoins can be offered in key African markets. Her position places her at the center of the growing competition to connect African financial institutions and payment providers to dollar-denominated digital assets. Circle aims to expand stablecoins' use in cross-border payments, remittances, and business transactions across emerging economies.
The demand for stablecoins in Africa has shown significant growth. Between 2022 and 2026, stablecoin transfers through peer-to-peer channels in Sub-Saharan Africa surged more than sixfold, reaching $14.6 billion. Circle itself reported $73.3 billion in USDC circulation at the end of Q2 2026, marking a 19% increase from the previous year. Quarterly on-chain transaction volume for USDC also saw a substantial rise, surging 151% to $14.8 trillion.
Darko’s appointment strengthens Circle’s regional leadership, signaling Africa's emergence as an important market for dollar-backed stablecoins. This push comes amid growing demand for faster and potentially cheaper international transactions. The region faces challenges such as fragmented payment systems, currency volatility, and limited access to dollars, creating opportunities for digital asset providers. Circle has been expanding its partnerships across the continent to address these needs.
Darko previously served as Group Vice President of Strategy at Yellow Card, where she helped shape commercial expansion and partnerships. She joined Yellow Card in 2024 and left in October 2026. Her career spans traditional finance and financial technology, including roles at JPMorgan Asset Management, PwC, and African fintech JUMO. Circle has also made strategic moves, partnering with Sasai Fintech in March and investing in Nigerian payments company Flutterwave in July to support USDC integration.
