Deutsche Bank Adds Nigeria to Frontier FX Watchlist Amid Naira Gains

TLDR
- Deutsche Bank AG has added Nigeria to its frontier foreign exchange monitor, citing the naira as undervalued.
- The bank sees attractive carry-trade opportunities due to high interest rates and potential for further currency appreciation.
- Fiscal pressures and government borrowing are identified as significant risks to the naira's performance.
Deutsche Bank AG has added Nigeria to its frontier foreign exchange monitor, signalling growing investor interest in the naira. The German multinational bank made this move on Monday, indicating expectations that the currency could strengthen further against the US dollar.
The bank considers the naira undervalued and attractive for carry-trade investors, who seek to profit from differences in interest rates between currencies. This positive outlook is largely based on Nigeria's interest-rate advantage and the potential for further currency appreciation. High yields on Nigerian government securities make the market appealing to foreign portfolio investors seeking returns above those available in many other markets.
The Nigerian naira appreciated by 0.45% against the U.S. dollar in September, strengthening from N1,335.50/$ at the end of August to N1,329.50/$ at the end of September. It closed September N6 stronger against the U.S. dollar and has appreciated by nearly 8% against the dollar in 2026, placing it among the top 10 performers out of 144 currencies tracked by Bloomberg.
This currency appreciation has boosted returns on Nigerian assets, including equities and local-currency bonds, which have delivered some of the highest returns globally. Deutsche Bank's inclusion of Nigeria in its frontier FX monitor adds to the positive signals surrounding the currency, improving perceptions of Nigeria’s foreign exchange market. The reclassification could also enhance Nigeria's visibility among international investors whose investment decisions are influenced by benchmark indices.
Deutsche Bank's decision comes weeks after global index provider FTSE Russell reclassified Nigeria from Unclassified to Frontier Market status, effective September 21, 2026. Nigeria was removed from FTSE Russell’s Frontier Market indices in September 2023 following persistent difficulties faced by international investors in repatriating capital. The index provider subsequently acknowledged improvements in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market and the clearance of outstanding FX backlogs before approving the country’s return to Frontier Market status earlier this year.
