AFRICAN STOCKS AND FINANCEOctober 4, 2026 at 4:03 PM UTC

TLDR

  • Fitch Ratings reaffirmed Stanbic IBTC Holdings' 'AAA(nga)' National Long-Term Rating.
  • This extends the group's hold at the top of Nigeria's national scale for over a decade.
  • The rating reflects strong liquidity, improved ratios, and capital position despite economic volatility.

Fitch Ratings has reaffirmed its ‘AAA(nga)’ National Long-Term Rating for Stanbic IBTC Holdings, extending the financial institution's hold at the top of Nigeria’s national scale. This marks over a decade of Stanbic IBTC maintaining the highest national rating from Fitch. The reaffirmation comes with a Stable Outlook, underscoring the company's resilience.

The rating reflects Stanbic IBTC’s strong financial health through a period of significant economic volatility in Nigeria. This includes naira devaluation, sharp interest rate hikes, and the Central Bank of Nigeria-mandated bank recapitalisation exercise. Fitch specifically cited the group's robust liquidity coverage in both local and foreign currency as a key factor.

Stanbic IBTC's loans-to-deposits ratio improved significantly, falling to 63 percent in the first quarter of 2026 from 100 percent in 2023, as deposit growth outpaced lending. Operating profit reached a record 12.8 percent of risk-weighted assets in the same quarter. The company's capital position also strengthened, with the Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio rising to 18.7 percent following a N147 billion rights issue completed in 2025. Fitch also noted the strategic backing of parent company Standard Bank Group, which holds a 68.46 percent stake in Stanbic IBTC.

This decade-long 'AAA' rating is significant for various stakeholders. For clients, it provides independent confirmation that their deposits are with a well-managed institution. Investors benefit from a reliable data point to support pricing on Stanbic IBTC’s debt and equity issuances. For the broader market, it serves as proof that a systemically important Nigerian institution has navigated a volatile decade without a single rating downgrade.

Chuma Nwokocha, Chief Executive of Stanbic IBTC Holdings, stated that the consistent rating reflects the institution's sound approach to risk and governance through different economic cycles. Stanbic IBTC has restated its commitment to engaging Fitch and other rating agencies as part of its regular investor disclosure process. The company plans to leverage its pan-African network and shared governance standards in these engagements.

Points clés à retenir

Stanbic IBTC Holdings' sustained 'AAA(nga)' rating from Fitch Ratings for over a decade is a significant benchmark for stability within Nigeria's often volatile financial landscape, underscoring its resilience amidst profound economic shifts. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the challenging conditions the country has experienced, including substantial naira devaluation, aggressive interest rate hikes, and the Central Bank of Nigeria's recent directive for bank recapitalisation, all of which have tested the robustness of financial institutions. The consistent top-tier rating serves as a robust indicator of the institution's sound risk management, strong governance, and operational resilience, reflecting its ability to "do what it says it will do, year after year," as highlighted by its Chief Executive. For investors, this provides a crucial independent data point, enhancing confidence in the pricing of Stanbic IBTC's debt and equity instruments and offering a reliable reference point. Clients, in turn, receive assurance that their deposits are held within a well-managed and reliable institution, reinforcing trust. More broadly, this sustained rating provides a compelling proof point that a systemically important Nigerian financial institution can navigate and emerge strong from a decade marked by considerable economic turbulence without a single rating downgrade, setting a high standard for stability and prudent financial management in the region and affirming its strategic position within the Nigerian financial ecosystem.
