The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank’s private investment arm, is acquiring a 6.5 percent stake in Kenyan supermarket chain Quickmart. This investment is part of Quickmart's KSh15 billion initial public offering (IPO). The move marks IFC's return to Kenya’s retail sector, four years after it divested from rival supermarket Naivas.
IFC will invest KSh1.94 billion ($15 million) for 258.67 million Quickmart shares, representing about 13 percent of the IPO offering. The transaction values the retailer at KSh30 billion, establishing IFC as a cornerstone investor. This provides Quickmart with backing from a major international development finance institution to support its capital raising efforts.
Quickmart paid shareholders KSh1.65 billion in dividends in its most recent financial year, a 109 percent payout ratio. The retailer committed to distributing at least 80 percent of annual earnings going forward. This IPO is expected to be among the largest planned listings on the Nairobi Securities Exchange. IFC's broader activity includes a KSh11.7 billion ($90 million) investment in Airtel Money’s IPO on the London Stock Exchange, which targets KSh90.5 billion.
For Quickmart, IFC's investment is expected to strengthen investor confidence in the IPO, helping the supermarket chain secure funds for its expansion plans. The offering allows investors to take a stake in one of Kenya’s growing supermarket chains amid strong competition. IFC is betting on Quickmart’s expansion and dividend payment record to deliver returns, similar to its earlier investment in Naivas.
This transaction marks IFC's re-entry into Kenya's supermarket industry, following its 2022 exit from Naivas. IFC was part of a consortium that held a 31.5 percent stake in Naivas between 2020 and 2022 before selling its shares. The Quickmart and Airtel Money deals underscore IFC’s increasing use of cornerstone investments. This strategy provides exposure to large African equity offerings and institutional backing for companies raising capital.
