Telecommunications tower company IHS Towers has announced the renewal of its contract with Airtel Nigeria. Under the renewed terms, Airtel has committed to acquiring 3,950 tenancies over the next five years, with the majority expected in 2024/2025.

In addition, Airtel will extend the term of its existing tenancies, covering 6,000 tenancies, until December 2031. The agreement includes 2,500 colocations, along with provisions for 5G amendments and the construction of build-to-suit sites to be owned and operated by IHS Nigeria.

Both parties have also agreed to collaborate on initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and implementing new green practices across the collective sites.

Following this deal, IHS Nigeria has recently completed the deployment of over 10,000km of fiber optic cables across Nigeria through its subsidiary, Global Independent Connect Limited (GICL). This initiative is part of IHS Towers' Fibre-to-the-Tower (FTTT) strategy, aimed at enabling the introduction of 5G technology in the country and supporting the National Broadband Plan. IHS Towers boasts nearly 40,000 towers across various countries, including Brazil, Cameroon, Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Kuwait, Nigeria, Peru, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zambia.
