Nairobi-based climate-tech startup Amini closes $4m seed round
Nairobi-based climate tech startup Amini, dedicated to addressing Africa's environmental data gap through artificial intelligence and satellite technology, has secured $4 million in seed funding. Salesforce Ventures, the global investment arm of Salesforce, and Female Founders Fund, a seed-stage venture fund focusing on female-founded companies, led the funding round.
This successful raise follows a $2 million pre-seed funding round in March 2023, led by Pale Blue Dot, with participation from Superorganism, a contributor to this seed round, and new investors like Satgana. Amini, boasting a team with over 20 years of combined experience in developing AI solutions for tech giants like NVIDIA, Arm, and Apple, is committed to building an AI ecosystem tailored to the emerging markets it serves.
The funds from this latest round will fuel Amini's expansion into new sectors, particularly supporting major food and beverage companies and consumer packaged goods producers seeking sustainable transformations in their supply chains across the tropical belt. This momentum builds on Amini's initial success with corporations and multinationals in the agricultural and insurance industries, including collaborations with Aon, a global professional services firm.
Key Takeaways
Africa is home to abundant land and mineral resources but only accounts for 3% of global GDP while grappling with frequent food and water scarcity. One reason for this is the lack of reliable and trustworthy data, hampering business decisions, capital allocation, and climate change impact measurement. Amini aims to address this and is part of a slew of climate-focused African startups that have attracted VC dollars. African climate tech startups secured over $860 million in 2022, and this year, firms such as Novastar Ventures, Catalyst Fund, and Equator are raising or have raised climate-tech funds for Africa.
