TLDR

  • Nigerian fintech LemFi has expanded its services beyond remittances.
  • The company launched new savings, credit, and eSIM offerings after rebuilding its app.
  • LemFi processes US$2 billion monthly for over 2 million customers across 30+ countries.

Nigerian cross-border fintech LemFi has rebuilt its application and launched a new global brand. The company is expanding its services beyond remittances to include savings, credit, and eSIM connectivity. LemFi was founded in 2021 by Ridwan Olalere and Rian Cochran.

The company has introduced savings and credit services in the United Kingdom, with plans to expand these offerings to other markets. It also launched eSIM connectivity, enabling customers to purchase mobile data in over 100 destinations without needing to change SIM cards or incur roaming charges. To facilitate this expansion, LemFi re-architected its app to integrate multiple products across various countries within a single user account. A new brand platform, "Ambition has no passport," will be rolled out across its global markets.

LemFi currently serves more than 2 million customers, allowing them to send money to over 30 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and other regions. The fintech processes approximately US$2 billion in transactions each month. To date, LemFi has raised over US$85 million from investors. These investors include Highland Europe, Left Lane Capital, Palm Drive Capital, Endeavor Catalyst, and Y Combinator.

This strategic expansion matters for investors as LemFi diversifies its product portfolio beyond its core remittance business. The move aims to address the broader financial needs of its customer base, who often manage financial affairs across multiple countries. By offering savings, credit, and eSIM services, LemFi seeks to deepen customer engagement and potentially open new revenue streams. This approach reflects a recognition that customers build lives and businesses across borders, requiring a more integrated financial system.

Co-founder Ridwan Olalere stated that while sending money home was the initial challenge, the more complex issues arise after the transfer. He highlighted that the traditional financial system often treats individuals as if their financial presence is limited to one location. LemFi has rebuilt its platform to better align with the cross-border realities of its users' lives. The company plans to introduce its new savings and credit services to additional markets following the UK launch.

Points clés à retenir

LemFi's strategic expansion beyond its core remittance services into savings, credit, and eSIM connectivity underscores a broader trend among fintechs to address the multifaceted financial needs of the African diaspora and other globally mobile individuals. While the company successfully built a foundation by simplifying cross-border money transfers, processing approximately US$2 billion monthly for over 2 million customers across more than 30 countries, its leadership recognizes that customer challenges extend beyond mere transactions. Co-founder Ridwan Olalere articulated this by stating that the "harder problem starts after the transfer," as individuals often navigate careers and businesses in one country while simultaneously supporting families in another, a reality poorly served by conventional financial systems that treat users as if they exist in only one place. By re-architecting its application to seamlessly integrate diverse products within a single account and launching a new brand platform, "Ambition has no passport," LemFi aims to construct a more comprehensive and responsive financial ecosystem. This move allows the company, which has secured over US$85 million in funding, to deepen its engagement with customers, evolving from a singular remittance provider to a more integrated financial partner for those whose lives span international borders.
