Egyptian startup gets US FDA accreditation for food analysis
Nawah Scientific, a life sciences and biotech startup based in Egypt, has recently earned accreditation from the United States Food and Drug Administration (US-FDA) for food analysis.
Established in 2015, Nawah Scientific operates as an online platform that facilitates experiment requests, sample collection, testing procedures, and the digital delivery of results. The platform's overarching goal is to empower scientists to conduct high-quality research, irrespective of their geographical location or access to laboratory facilities.
With its newfound accreditation from the US FDA for food analysis and safety, Nawah becomes the pioneer African center to attain such recognition. This achievement is poised to streamline processes for Egyptian and African companies by eliminating the need to send samples abroad for analysis, thereby saving time and costs.
Points clés à retenir
Ensuring food safety is imperative for Africa's quest for food and nutritional security. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that global unsafe food results in 600 million foodborne diseases and 420,000 deaths. Shockingly, children under five contribute to 30% of these fatalities. The WHO suggests that approximately 33 million healthy life years are lost annually worldwide due to the ingestion of unsafe food, with the actual figure likely being underestimated. That underscores the importance of Nawah’s work and its recent milestone not only advances the company’s mission but also boosts the image of Africa’s research capacity on the global stage. Nawah Scientific intends to capitalize on this accreditation to extend its presence into key African markets, including Nigeria and South Africa. The startup had successfully concluded a pre-Series A funding round of $1 million in 2021 and secured additional funding from the Cairo Angels Syndicate Fund in the previous year.
