Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group) and the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) have advanced cross-border collaboration efforts. Stakeholders from both markets met in Nairobi on Tuesday to explore stronger connections across Africa. This engagement occurred during a Dangote Petroleum Refinery IPO High-Level Investor Engagement, hosted by the NSE. Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, commended NGX Group's Chairman, Umaru Kwairanga, and GMD/CEO, Temi Popoola, for their roles.
The initiative aims to enable companies to access capital across multiple African markets, instead of limiting their presence to home countries. This builds on an April meeting in Lagos where NGX Group gathered African exchange leaders to discuss market connectivity. Temi Popoola emphasized the continental objective: uniting African exchanges for stronger connections. He sees the Nairobi engagement as a crucial first step and a model for broader cooperation.
Aliko Dangote cited the planned Dangote refinery in Mokowe – Lamu as an example of opportunities from stronger integration. This proposed 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Lamu is intended to serve the East African market. Its scale underscores the potential for significant cross-border business and investment opportunities across the continent.
This collaboration offers companies expanded access to capital across various African markets, allowing consideration of multiple listings. For investors, it promises greater opportunities, deeper market relationships, and shared expertise. The broader aim is to facilitate increased cross-border access to capital-market opportunities. This aligns with wider continental efforts, including the African Exchanges Linkage Project (AELP), to enhance connectivity and enable cross-border trading and investment.
Temi Popoola stated the ambition is to build on the Kenya engagement, developing a model for broader continental cooperation. He views this work as a prototype for how African markets can support greater connectivity, with potential to scale across West Africa and the wider continent. Frank Mwiti, CEO of the Nairobi Securities Exchange, also commended NGX Group, noting that stronger collaboration could deepen market relationships and create greater opportunities.
