The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) has suspended trading in the shares of Regency Alliance Insurance Plc, International Energy Insurance Plc, and Universal Insurance Plc, effective September 1, 2025.
The suspension was triggered by the companies’ failure to submit their audited financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2024, within the required timeframe. NGX said the move followed the expiration of the regulatory Cure Period under its Default Filing Rules.
The rules mandate that issuers who fail to meet filing obligations receive a second deficiency notice, face a trading suspension, and have the action reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the investing public within 24 hours.
The suspension prevents investors from buying or selling shares in the three insurers until the companies comply. NGX did not specify how long the suspension will last. Past cases have extended for weeks or months, depending on how quickly firms address compliance gaps.

Points clés à retenir
The suspension of Regency Alliance, International Energy Insurance, and Universal Insurance underscores regulators’ growing insistence on timely corporate disclosure to strengthen transparency in Nigeria’s capital markets. For investors, the immediate impact is illiquidity: shares in the three firms cannot be traded until results are filed, limiting portfolio flexibility. For the insurers, delays in releasing audited statements may raise concerns over governance and financial stability, especially in a sector where several players have faced similar compliance lapses in recent years. Regulatory enforcement has become more consistent as NGX and the Securities and Exchange Commission push for stronger corporate accountability. Timely disclosures are viewed as essential for market confidence and accurate valuations. The suspensions signal to other issuers that late filings carry real consequences, a trend likely to continue as Nigerian regulators work to align with global standards and attract more institutional investors.
