TLDR

  • Nigerian banks and asset managers are considering offering stablecoin services to customers.
  • This move is driven by increasing digital asset adoption for cross-border payments and currency hedging.
  • Regulators emphasize the need for robust frameworks to ensure trust and investor protection in the evolving market.

Nigerian banks, asset managers, and fintechs are exploring offering stablecoin and digital asset services. This potential expansion into mainstream finance was highlighted by Buchi Okoro, Co-Founder and CEO of Quidax. Okoro spoke at "The Exchange" event in Lagos, hosted by Quidax and Tether, gathering regulators, executives, and industry leaders.

Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value, typically pegged to the US dollar. Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies, dollar-backed stablecoins like Tether’s USDT aim for a one-to-one value. Their appeal in emerging markets stems from facilitating cross-border payments and providing access to dollar-linked assets. Quidax aims to support institutions entering this market by offering infrastructure and regulatory guidance, emphasizing compliance and trust.

Institutional interest aligns with significant digital asset activity in Nigeria. The International Monetary Fund reported Nigeria received approximately $59 billion in crypto asset inflows between July 2023 and June 2024. Chainalysis data cited by the Securities and Exchange Commission further shows Nigeria contributed over $92.1 billion to sub-Saharan Africa's $205 billion on-chain value between July 2024 and June 2025, making it the region's largest market. Nigeria also ranked third globally in the 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index.

This growing institutional engagement could integrate digital assets into core financial services, moving beyond individual traders to encompass cross-border payments and business transactions. For companies like Quidax, this presents an opportunity to become a key partner for institutions. For investors, it signifies enhanced access to dollar-linked assets, offering a potential hedge against naira depreciation and inflation. This expansion could broaden product offerings and tap into a rapidly evolving digital economy.

The regulatory environment remains critical for financial institutions considering stablecoin services. John Briggs, Head of the SEC’s Lagos Zonal Office, emphasized the increasing importance of regulation and investor protection amid digital asset growth. Quidax received approval-in-principle from the SEC in August 2024, though this did not constitute full registration. The SEC clarified on October 29 that no digital asset operator has yet received full registration, underscoring ongoing regulatory framework development.

Points clés à retenir

The increasing institutional interest in stablecoins in Nigeria reflects a broader trend of digital asset adoption driven by economic realities. The International Monetary Fund noted that Nigerian households and small businesses are increasingly using dollar-pegged crypto assets for international money transfers, a response to naira depreciation, high inflation, and limited access to foreign exchange in recent years. While stablecoins offer a practical solution for cross-border transactions and accessing dollar-linked assets, their widespread use presents significant challenges for monetary policy and financial regulation. The IMF warned of potential digital dollarization, which could weaken demand for the naira and reduce the effectiveness of domestic monetary policy. Concerns also include money laundering risks and difficulties in monitoring transactions outside conventional financial channels. John Briggs of the Securities and Exchange Commission underscored these regulatory imperatives, stating that the growth of digital asset activity makes investor protection paramount. He emphasized that Nigerians are already using digital assets to manage currency risk, and the critical question is ensuring this future of finance is built on trust and a robust regulatory framework. The SEC's ongoing efforts to supervise digital asset operators, as seen with Quidax's approval-in-principle, highlight the commitment to balancing innovation with stability and consumer protection in Nigeria's rapidly expanding digital asset market.
