Nigerian Firms Report N12.1T PBT Amid Headwinds

Chart showing profit before tax growth for Nigerian listed companies.
AFRICAN STOCKS AND FINANCENovember 3, 2026 at 11:54 AM UTC

TLDR

  • Twenty-two Nigerian listed companies reported N12.1 trillion in profit before tax for the first nine months of 2026.
  • This represents a 35.4% increase year-on-year, achieved despite significant macroeconomic headwinds.
  • MTN Nigeria, Dangote Cement, and Seplat Energy were among the top performers, demonstrating strong resilience.

Twenty-two companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Limited reported a combined profit before tax of N12.1 trillion for the nine months ended September 30, 2026. This marks a substantial 35.4% increase from the N8.94 trillion recorded by the same group in the corresponding period of 2025. The strong financial outcomes highlight the performance of major players across various sectors, including financial institutions, cement manufacturing, and others.

Beyond profit before tax, this group of companies, which includes market leaders like MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, Dangote Cement Plc, and Seplat Energy Plc, also generated an estimated N7.6 trillion in profit after tax. This figure represents a 22.1% rise compared to the N6.2 trillion reported in the first nine months of 2025. These impressive results were achieved despite a challenging macroeconomic environment marked by various domestic and international pressures.

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc recorded the highest profit before tax, reaching N1.79 trillion, a significant 59.4% jump from N1.13 trillion in 2025. Dangote Cement Plc followed with N1.47 trillion in profit before tax, an increase of 41.45% over N1.04 trillion in the prior year. Seplat Energy Plc also demonstrated robust growth, with its profit before tax rising 52.7% to N1.34 trillion from N878.99 billion. MTN's CEO noted service revenue growth of 23.7% for the nine months, with an EBITDA margin of 56.9%.

These results underscore the resilience of Nigerian companies amidst persistent economic headwinds such as insecurity and fluctuating consumer purchasing power. While inflation eased to 14.63% by September 2026 from 15.15% in December 2025, the Naira also saw some strengthening, closing September 2026 at N1,331.50 against the dollar from N1,478.00 a year prior. An investment banker attributed the profit generation to improved economic indicators and the companies' ability to pass on increased operational costs, such as petrol and diesel prices, to customers.

Globally, the economy faces fresh shocks from ongoing geopolitical tensions, with growth projected to slow to 3.1% in 2026 and 3.2% in 2027. Despite these external pressures and domestic challenges, Nigerian companies continue to demonstrate resilience. Dangote Cement, for instance, has outlined priorities to sustain volume growth, protect margins through cost discipline, and expand its regional market presence, alongside completing strategic capacity investments.

Points clés à retenir

The reporting highlights a significant financial achievement by 22 listed Nigerian companies, collectively reporting N12.1 trillion in profit before tax for the first nine months of 2026, a substantial 35.4% increase year-on-year. This performance is particularly notable given the challenging macroeconomic landscape that characterized the period. Nigeria's economy has contended with persistent issues like insecurity and weak purchasing power, even as inflation showed signs of easing to 14.63% by September 2026 from 15.15% in December 2025. The Naira also saw some appreciation against the dollar during this period, closing September 2026 at N1,331.50 from N1,478.00 a year prior. Globally, the ongoing unrest in the Middle East has impacted oil prices and contributed to broader economic uncertainties, with global growth projected to slow in 2026 and 2027 due to rising geopolitical tensions. Despite these internal and external pressures, companies like MTN Nigeria, Dangote Cement, and Seplat Energy demonstrated robust growth, with their CEOs attributing success to factors such as volume-led growth, disciplined execution of strategic priorities, and expanded market reach. Analysts suggest that the ability of these companies to effectively pass on increased operational costs, such as fuel prices, to consumers, combined with improved economic indicators, played a crucial role in their strong profit generation, underscoring their adaptability and resilience in a volatile operating environment.
