Nigerian stocks fell for a fourth consecutive week, wiping about N206 billion from market value in the five trading sessions ended October 23, 2026, as losses in banking, insurance and oil stocks outweighed gains in industrial companies. The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) All-Share Index declined 0.13% to 247,222.27 points from 247,539.73 points a week earlier, while equity market capitalization dropped to N160.519 trillion from N160.725 trillion. The index remained up 58.87% since the start of 2026 despite falling 1.59% in October.

Trading activity increased during the week, with investors exchanging 2.024 billion shares worth N110.77 billion across 173,113 deals, compared with 1.659 billion shares valued at N98.09 billion the previous week. Trading volume rose 22%, while transaction value increased 12.93%. Financial services accounted for 54.89% of shares traded and 48.66% of total transaction value. Multitrex Integrated Foods, Zenith Bank and Livestock Feeds accounted for 521.57 million shares worth N19.09 billion, representing 25.76% of market volume.

The insurance sector led declines, falling 2.79%, followed by oil and gas at 2.55% and banking at 0.67%. The NGX 30 Index declined 0.01% to 9,100.27 points, while the NGX Main Board Index lost 0.77%. Industrial goods gained 1.95%, supported by buying in Dangote Cement, which rose 10% on Friday. The NGX Premium Index advanced 0.80%, while the Consumer Goods Index declined 0.55%.

ABC Transport led weekly gainers, rising 20.66% to N7.30, followed by AVA Capital, which gained 17.74% to N7.30. Caverton Offshore Support Group advanced 17.07% to N4.80, while Fidelity Bank climbed 14.01% to N24. UPDC Real Estate Investment Trust recorded the largest decline, falling 17.26% to N17.50. NGX Group dropped 10.29%, while Livestock Feeds lost 10.26%.

Market breadth weakened, with 20 stocks gaining against 55 decliners, compared with 50 gainers and 30 losers the previous week. Another 71 stocks remained unchanged. However, Friday's 0.92% rebound added about N1.47 trillion to market capitalization, reducing the week's losses. In the fixed-income market, bond transactions fell to N226.31 million from N2.64 billion, while exchange-traded product turnover declined to N244.25 million.

Points clés à retenir

Nigeria's stock market has declined for 4 consecutive weeks, but the benchmark index remains up 58.87% in 2026, suggesting investors are taking profits after months of gains. The latest correction comes as market breadth has weakened, with 55 stocks declining and 20 advancing, compared with 30 losers and 50 gainers the previous week. This reversal shows that selling pressure has spread across more companies, even as the index recorded a smaller weekly decline of 0.13%. The NGX Banking Index has fallen 7.25% in October, while insurance stocks are down 3.47% and oil and gas shares have lost 3.38%. However, industrial goods gained 1.98% during the month, supporting the market. Friday's rebound, which added N1.47 trillion to market capitalization, was supported by gains in Dangote Cement and First HoldCo, both of which rose 10% during the session. The recovery suggests buying interest remains in selected companies despite the broader decline. Investors are also weighing the interest-rate outlook after the Central Bank of Nigeria reduced its benchmark monetary policy rate to 23% in September. Lower rates could reduce financing costs for companies and influence how investors allocate money between equities and fixed-income securities. However, government securities continue to offer yields that compete with stock market returns. The increase in weekly equity turnover to N110.77 billion suggests trading interest has recovered, although the number of transactions declined. Investors will be watching whether the rebound extends into the next trading week, whether bank shares stabilize and whether upcoming company earnings provide support for prices.
