Nigeria's Net Foreign Reserves Hit Record High of $55B

Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Olayemi Cardoso
AFRICAN BUSINESS AND ECONOMYOctober 8, 2026 at 12:45 PM UTC

TLDR

  • Nigeria's net foreign reserves reached a record $46 billion, announced by CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso.
  • Gross foreign reserves also hit an all-time high of $55 billion, significantly improving external liquidity.
  • The increase boosts investor confidence and helps stabilize the foreign exchange market, supporting Nigeria's economic outlook.

Nigeria's net foreign reserves have climbed to a record $46 billion, with gross holdings reaching an all-time high of $55 billion. Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Olayemi Cardoso disclosed these figures at the Nigeria-Asia Connectivity Dialogue on Thursday. This significant improvement strengthens the country's external liquidity and aims to sustain foreign exchange market stability.

The increase in reserves provides the CBN with a larger buffer to manage foreign exchange pressures. A stable FX market, combined with stronger reserves, is boosting investor confidence, encouraging funds into Nigeria and facilitating capital repatriation. Net reserves offer a clearer indication of available foreign currency after accounting for external liabilities.

The $46 billion net reserve position represents a substantial improvement from about $3 billion reported in 2023. This also marks an increase of approximately $11.2 billion from $34.80 billion at the end of December 2025. Gross reserves have shown a sustained rise, now surpassing the $55 billion mark and exceeding the CBN’s earlier projection of $51.04 billion for the end of 2026.

Stronger reserves and a more stable naira, recently trading around N1,330/$, are giving investors greater confidence to plan and bring funds into Nigeria. For businesses, this could support confidence in the naira and ease planning for import payments. This positive development follows a period of severe pressure on Nigeria's foreign exchange market. The improvement coincides with an optimistic economic outlook, with the World Bank recently raising Nigeria's 2026 growth forecast to 4.3%.

While these figures signal a stronger external position, the broader test for the economy is whether this translates into consistent foreign exchange liquidity and greater predictability for businesses. Exchange-rate performance will also depend on sustained foreign currency inflows, import demand, oil receipts, and capital movements. The CBN recently reduced the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by 350 basis points to 23% from 26.5%, an operational reset to improve monetary policy effectiveness.

Points clés à retenir

Nigeria's significant rebound in foreign reserves, with net holdings reaching a record $46 billion and gross reserves topping $55 billion, marks a critical turning point for the nation's economic stability. This improvement is particularly noteworthy given that net reserves had plummeted to as low as $3 billion in 2023, underscoring the scale of the recovery. The distinction between net and gross reserves is crucial; net figures offer a more accurate picture of readily available foreign currency after accounting for short-term obligations like currency swaps, providing a stronger foundation for managing external pressures. Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso emphasized that this enhanced external liquidity, coupled with a more stable foreign exchange market, is instrumental in restoring investor confidence, encouraging capital inflows, and facilitating the repatriation of investments. While these figures signal a stronger external position and offer relief to import-dependent businesses by potentially improving access to dollars, the sustainability of this positive trend remains paramount. The long-term impact on the naira's strength and overall foreign exchange stability will hinge on consistent foreign currency inflows, prudent management of import demand, oil receipts, and capital movements. The recent reduction in the Monetary Policy Rate, framed as an operational adjustment rather than a shift in policy stance, suggests the CBN is cautiously navigating monetary policy amidst these improvements, aiming for sustained economic predictability and a robust environment for investment.
