Nigeria-Focused Fintech PalmPay Eyes Hong Kong IPO

Daba Finance/Nigeria-Focused Fintech PalmPay Eyes Hong Kong IPO
BREAKING NEWSAugust 4, 2026 at 11:07 AM UTC

TLDR

  • PalmPay Ltd. is gearing up for a potential IPO in Hong Kong, aiming to raise around $200 million and attaining unicorn status with a valuation over $1 billion.
  • The move to base its operations in Hong Kong aligns PalmPay with its Asian investors, providing proximity to new capital sources for its expansion in Africa and South Asia.
  • Successful funding could pave the way for a Hong Kong IPO, positioning PalmPay among African fintech unicorns and necessitating public disclosure of financial metrics for investor assessment and market entry.

PalmPay Ltd. is preparing for a possible initial public offering in Hong Kong as the Africa-focused fintech seeks about $200 million from investors, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the plans. The funding round values the company at more than $1 billion, giving PalmPay unicorn status.

Talks are continuing, and the fundraising amount, valuation and IPO plan may change. PalmPay has not set a listing date or named banks for the share sale. A Hong Kong listing would give the company access to Asian investors as it expands across Africa and South Asia.

The plan follows PalmPay’s decision to make Hong Kong the base for its multi-market operations. The company signed an agreement with Hong Kong’s Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises, which supports companies establishing operations in the city. The base places PalmPay near its Asian shareholders and new sources of capital.

PalmPay started operations in Nigeria in 2019 after raising $40 million from investors led by Transsion, the maker of Tecno, Infinix and Itel phones. Other backers include NetEase and MediaTek. It raised another $100 million in 2021 and has secured about $140 million since its launch.

The company has more than 35 million registered users and about 1 million business clients. Its services include transfers, bill payments, savings, cards, credit and insurance offered through partners. PalmPay became profitable in 2025 and operates consumer businesses in Nigeria, Tanzania and Bangladesh, with business payment services in Ghana and South Africa.

Points clés à retenir

The funding round would give PalmPay cash for expansion while setting a price that could guide a Hong Kong IPO. A valuation above $1 billion would place it alongside African fintech unicorns such as OPay, Flutterwave and Moniepoint, but a private valuation does not guarantee the same value on a stock exchange. Public investors will need information on revenue, profit, customer activity, costs and risks in each market. PalmPay’s choice of Hong Kong reflects its ownership and business links. Transsion, NetEase and MediaTek are based in Asia, while the company serves users in Africa and South Asia. Hong Kong can connect those parts of the business and offer access to investors familiar with payment and consumer-technology companies. The listing could also provide an exit route for early shareholders and give PalmPay shares it can use for purchases or staff pay. The company still faces risks from regulation, fraud, currency changes and competition in Nigeria, its main market. Its use of Transsion phones for distribution helped it gain customers, but investors will test whether those users generate profit and remain active. The $200 million round is the next step. An IPO will depend on the funding terms, market conditions and whether PalmPay is ready for public reporting.
