Kenyan convenience shop chain Quickmart has launched an initial public offering on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, making 2 billion ordinary shares available for sale. The share offer, which opened on October 5, aims to raise KES 15 billion ($115.6 million) and is set to close on October 30. This marks a significant move for the company, which seeks to list on the NSE's Main Investment Market Segment.
Investors can acquire shares at KES 7.50 ($0.05) each, with the offering comprising 50% of the shares held by Mauritius-registered Sokoni Retail Kenya Limited. No new shares are being issued; instead, existing shareholders are selling down their stakes. The IPO requires valid applications for at least 75% of the offer shares to proceed, as it is not underwritten.
Quickmart operates 72 modern retail grocery shops across 16 of Kenya's 47 counties, positioning itself as the second-largest supermarket network in the country. The company projects adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of KES 6.6 billion and adjusted net income of KES 2.3 billion for 2026. This forecast implies a price/earnings ratio of 12.9x based on adjusted earnings.
The share sale provides an opportunity for Quickmart's current shareholders, including private equity firm Adenia Partners (50.8%), the founders of Quickmart (32.8%), and Tumaini supermarkets (12.0%), to realize returns on their investments. Adenia Partners, which orchestrated the merger of Quickmart and Tumaini in 2019, will remain the largest shareholder post-IPO. This partial exit strategy allows the firm to take profits while maintaining a controlling interest in the expanding retail chain.
Quickmart, originally established in Nakuru in 2006, saw rapid expansion after Adenia Partners' investment in 2019 and the subsequent merger with Tumaini in 2020. The company aims to list on the NSE's Main Investment Market Segment on November 12, though this date is subject to change. This IPO is only the second major offering on the Nairobi Securities Exchange since 2015, highlighting a renewed interest in public listings in the Kenyan market.
