Tunisia invites mobile network operators to bid on 5G licenses

Tunisia’s Ministry of Communication Technologies has announced a tender for the installation and operation of a public telecommunications network to provide 5G mobile services as the North African country looks to ensure high-speed internet access nationwide.
Operators wishing to participate must register by submitting a fee of 5,000 Tunisian dinars ($1,600) and a commitment guarantee to a specified CCP account. The Tender Dossier will be available for collection starting July 3.
Tunisia boasts a mobile penetration rate of 136.5% and a mobile broadband penetration rate of 97.2% and has three major mobile network operators: Tunisia Telecom, Ooredoo Tunisia, and Orange Tunisia, along with two internet service providers: Global Net and Topnet.

Tunisia's 5G plans coincide with many African countries launching and rolling out next-gen technology. In January, Somalia's Hormuud Telecom and Somtel launched 5G networks. That same month, Telecom Egypt secured the country's first 5G license for $150 million. In October 2023, Namibia's Communications Regulatory Authority awarded 5G licenses to three operators, while Orange tested 5G in Sierra Leone, planning to launch services across its African operations by the end of 2024. In September 2023, Ethio Telecom launched commercial 5G services in Ethiopia, following Emtel's 5G launch in Mauritius and MTN and Airtel's 5G launches in Uganda and Zambia in August 2023.
