African currencies play a central role in investing across the continent. Stocks, bonds and other financial assets are generally priced in local currencies, exposing international investors to exchange-rate movements.

A company can deliver strong returns in its domestic market while producing lower returns when the investment is converted into dollars or euros.

Understanding major African currencies is therefore essential for evaluating investment performance.

What Are Africa’s Main Currencies?

Moroccan dirhamMADMorocco
West African CFA francXOF8 WAEMU countries
Central African CFA francXAF6 CEMAC countries

These currencies operate under different monetary and exchange-rate arrangements.

The naira, rand, cedi and Kenyan shilling respond to foreign exchange market conditions and central bank policies.

The CFA francs, meanwhile, maintain fixed exchange rates against the euro.

How Do Currency Movements Affect Investments?

Suppose an investor converts $1,000 into naira and purchases Nigerian shares.

The shares subsequently appreciate by 20% in naira terms.

If the naira loses 15% of its value against the dollar over the same period, the investment’s dollar return is approximately 2%.

This illustrates why local-currency performance and international investment returns can differ.

Currency appreciation can have the opposite effect by increasing the value of foreign investments.

Understanding the CFA Franc

The West African CFA franc is used by 8 countries that share the BRVM.

It is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of €1 = CFA 655.957.

The Central African CFA franc has the same euro parity but is issued by a different monetary authority.

For euro-based investors, the West African CFA franc’s fixed exchange rate reduces one source of currency volatility.

However, dollar-based investors remain exposed to movements in the euro-dollar exchange rate.

What Determines African Exchange Rates?

Currency movements are influenced by inflation, interest rates, international trade, foreign investment, commodity prices and monetary policy.

For example, oil revenues can affect foreign exchange availability in Nigeria.

Mining exports can influence South Africa’s economic outlook and international currency flows.

Central bank decisions also affect borrowing costs and currency market expectations.

How Can Investors Manage Currency Risk?

Investors can diversify across companies, sectors and currencies.

They should calculate returns in their home currency and account for conversion costs.

Currency movements should also be considered when comparing securities listed on different African exchanges.

The bottom line: African currency movements can significantly affect investment returns. Evaluating both company performance and exchange-rate exposure is essential for investors building portfolios across the continent.
