Dangote Petroleum Refinery is the newest and largest arm of Dangote Group, a Nigerian conglomerate built over several decades by Aliko Dangote. Understanding the wider group helps put the refinery IPO in context — this isn’t a single-asset startup, but the latest expansion of an already-established industrial business.
Dangote Cement is the group’s most established listed business and one of Africa’s largest cement producers, already trading on the NGX with operations across multiple African countries. It’s a separate, already-public company from the refinery and has its own share price, unrelated to whatever price the refinery IPO eventually sets.
Beyond cement, Dangote Group’s businesses include Dangote Sugar Refinery (also separately listed on NGX), salt processing, flour milling, and Dangote Fertilizer, a large-scale granulated urea plant also located in the Lekki area that has been positioned as a major player in African and global fertilizer supply. The group has historically focused on import substitution — building domestic manufacturing capacity for products Nigeria previously imported heavily, from cement to sugar to, now, refined petroleum products.
The refinery represents the group’s move into oil and gas at a scale well beyond its previous businesses, both in capital invested (commonly cited around $19–20 billion) and in strategic significance, since Nigeria — despite being a major crude oil producer — has for years relied heavily on imported refined fuel. A fully operational Dangote refinery, now reportedly running at its full 650,000 barrel-per-day capacity as of February 2026, is aimed at closing that gap.
For investors, the key distinction to keep straight is that Dangote Cement, Dangote Sugar, and the refinery are (or would be) separate listed entities, each with its own shares, financials, and risks — owning one doesn’t give you exposure to the others. If the refinery IPO proceeds, it would add a fourth major Dangote-linked listing for investors to evaluate independently, not a single combined “Dangote stock.”
