Do You Need a Nigerian Bank Account to Buy Dangote Shares?

Not necessarily, though it depends on how your brokerage account is structured. Here’s how this generally works for NGX investing, including a future Dangote IPO subscription.
When you buy shares on the NGX, your money needs to move from you to the stockbroker handling your trade, and eventually to the company or seller on the other side of the transaction. For Nigeria-resident investors, this is typically done through a linked Nigerian bank account, since it’s the most direct and familiar rail. For diaspora or foreign investors, some NGX-licensed brokers offer account structures that let you fund your investment via international wire transfer directly into the broker’s designated account, without requiring you to personally hold a separate Nigerian retail bank account.
What you do generally need, regardless of banking setup, is a brokerage account with an NGX-licensed stockbroker and a CSCS account, where your shares are actually held once allotted. The CSCS account is separate from any bank account and is specifically for holding securities, not cash.
Because practices vary by broker, some diaspora-focused brokers are built specifically to serve clients without a Nigerian bank account, while others may still expect one, the only reliable way to confirm your specific situation is to ask a broker directly about their funding process for non-resident clients before assuming either outcome.
For a future Dangote IPO subscription specifically, no official process has been published as of this writing, so we can’t confirm exactly how retail subscription payments will be structured for diaspora investors without a Nigerian bank account. Once Dangote’s prospectus is published, it should specify accepted payment channels; Daba will flag that detail as soon as it’s officially available.
