How Much is the Dangote Refinery Worth?

Valuation estimates for Dangote Petroleum Refinery have circulated widely in the media, commonly citing figures in the range of roughly $39 billion to $50 billion. It’s worth understanding where these numbers come from and why they should be treated as estimates rather than confirmed facts.
One figure with a more specific origin: reporting has cited a private placement round completed by Dangote ahead of its formal IPO filing, with shares priced at around $0.35 each, which one analysis site calculated as implying a roughly $39.1 billion valuation at that time. Separately, founder Aliko Dangote and some financial media have referenced target valuations toward the higher end, around $40 billion to $50 billion, tied to the planned public listing. These are meaningfully different sourcing types: one is derived from an actual (if not fully independently verified in all its details) private transaction price, the other reflects company and analyst targets for the eventual public offer.
Neither figure is the same as an SEC-confirmed IPO valuation, which will only be set once Dangote publishes an official prospectus with a defined offer price and share count. Valuations for large industrial assets like refineries are also inherently sensitive to assumptions: expected future cash flows, crude and refined product price forecasts, comparable company multiples, and the discount applied for company-specific risks like regulatory environment or single-asset concentration, all of which can shift a valuation estimate substantially depending on who’s calculating it and what assumptions they use.
For context on scale: at the upper end of the commonly cited range, a $50 billion valuation would make the refinery, if achieved, larger by market value than most currently listed companies on the NGX combined, based on the exchange’s typical overall market capitalization.
Until the SEC approves an offer and a prospectus is published with an actual valuation basis (typically derived from audited financials), treat every valuation figure you read, including the ones in this article, as an estimate, not a confirmed number.
