African startups are invited to apply for the second edition of Yamaha’s TRANSPOSE Innovation Challenge 2026. The program, backed by the Japanese music and audio giant, offers funding and support to winning founders. It aims to build the future of sound and entertainment. Applications are open until October 31.
Yamaha seeks companies that can help reimagine how people experience music, live events, and entertainment. Selected startups will receive project funding, technical resources, and mentorship to test, validate, and scale their products. The challenge is structured around four tracks: Venue, Senior, Game, and Timeless. These tracks focus on immersive live events, active ageing support through music, combining gaming with audio, and transforming temporary experiences into lasting assets.
The inaugural edition of the challenge last year attracted 314 applications from startups across 63 countries. This year, the Grand Prix Award winner will receive up to JPY5 million, equivalent to US$32,000, in proof-of-concept funding. This award also includes a chance to collaborate with Yamaha and its partners. The Yamaha Award offers up to JPY2 million, or US$13,000, in funding and a collaboration with the company.
Successful startups will gain the opportunity to co-create with Yamaha, leveraging its proprietary technologies, domain expertise, and assets. They will also access exclusive fundraising discussions with the company’s corporate venture capital team. This provides African innovators with a pathway to significant backing and market access from a global industry leader. For Yamaha, the challenge serves as a strategic avenue to integrate external innovation into its core business areas.
The TRANSPOSE Innovation Challenge represents Yamaha's continued commitment to fostering innovation in the sound and entertainment sectors. The initiative underscores the company's strategy to engage with the global startup ecosystem, particularly in Africa, to explore new technologies and business models. The YMI Fund Award further offers direct fundraising discussions with members of the Yamaha Music Innovations Fund, providing additional avenues for growth and investment.
