AgDevCo Ventures Raises $49M to Back East African Agribusinesses

Daba Finance/AgDevCo Ventures Raises $49M to Back East African Agribusinesses
BREAKING NEWSAugust 20, 2026 at 8:11 PM UTC

TLDR

  • AgDevCo Ventures secures $49 million for early-stage farming and food-processing companies in East Africa
  • Investment vehicle targets agricultural small and medium-sized businesses with investments ranging from $1-3 million
  • AgDevCo Ventures led by Christine Mwangi plans to benefit 128,000 farmers and create 2,900 full-time jobs报道

AgDevCo Ventures has reached a $49 million first close to provide financing to early-stage farming and food-processing companies in East Africa. The investment vehicle plans to make investments of $1 million to $3 million in agricultural small and medium-sized businesses that struggle to access long-term capital.

The financing combines public, development and private capital. The International Fund for Agricultural Development is providing $10 million of subordinated debt, while a group of senior lenders led by the Isenberg Family Charitable Foundation is contributing $11.25 million. The group also includes Small Foundation, A to Z Impact, Rabo Foundation and Netri Fundación Privada.

AgDevCo is providing another $28 million in equity using funding from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. The structure uses this capital to attract other investors into businesses that may be too small or early for banks and larger development-finance funds.

AgDevCo Ventures is based in Nairobi and led by Christine Mwangi. It expects to announce its first investments later in 2026. Over the next 10 years, the vehicle expects companies it finances to benefit more than 128,000 smallholder farmers and create about 2,900 full-time jobs.

The vehicle complements AgDevCo’s main strategy, which provides larger investments to companies at later stages of growth. AgDevCo manages $400 million and has made more than 88 investments in African farming and agricultural processing businesses. Ventures will target a high share of Black African-owned and women-owned companies while providing capital and support to help businesses expand.

Key Takeaways

The structure of the $49 million vehicle shows why financing small agricultural companies in Africa often requires more than one type of investor. AgDevCo is putting in $28 million of equity, IFAD is taking a subordinated position with $10 million and private and nonprofit lenders are providing $11.25 million of senior debt. That means some investors accept more risk so others can participate on terms that fit their mandates. The model is known as blended finance and is used when businesses can generate revenue but cannot secure enough capital from banks or commercial investors. Agriculture is suited to this approach because companies often face long production cycles, weather risk and cash flows that do not match short-term loans. AgDevCo Ventures is targeting the $1 million to $3 million range, below the larger deals that many development lenders prefer. This makes the first investments important. The vehicle needs to show that small agricultural businesses can use patient capital to expand and repay investors while creating jobs and buying from farmers. If the model works, the $49 million first close could serve as a base for bringing more private capital into a part of Africa’s agriculture market that remains short of long-term financing.
