Airtel Africa Picks London for $10B Mobile Money IPO
TLDR
- Airtel Africa selects London Stock Exchange for Airtel Money IPO, aiming for over $10 billion valuation
- Airtel Money's annual transaction value surpasses $245 billion, with 23.3% customer base growth
- London listing highlights the growth potential of Africa's mobile financial services sector, paving the way for future fintech IPOs
Airtel Africa has selected the London Stock Exchange as the primary listing venue for its Airtel Money business, paving the way for an initial public offering later this year that could value one of Africa's largest mobile payments platforms at more than $10 billion.
The listing, expected in the second half of 2026 subject to regulatory approvals, is intended to unlock the value of Airtel Money as demand for digital financial services accelerates across the continent. Chief Executive Officer Sunil Taldar said London offers access to a broad international investor base while supporting the company's long-term growth ambitions for its fintech business.
Airtel Money processed more than $245 billion in annualized transaction value during the latest quarter, a 51.5% increase from a year earlier, while its customer base grew 23.3% to 56.5 million users. The platform competes with services including M-Pesa and MTN MoMo as telecom operators expand into payments, remittances, merchant services and digital lending.
The announcement accompanied strong first-quarter earnings. Airtel Africa reported revenue of $1.85 billion, up 31% in reported currency, while EBITDA increased 36.6% to $928 million and net profit rose 27% to $198 million. The company now serves 189 million customers across 14 African markets, with smartphone penetration reaching 51% and average monthly data usage climbing to 10.6 gigabytes per customer. Airtel cautioned that higher energy costs linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East could weigh on margins in the near term, although it expects efficiency measures to offset part of the impact.
Key Takeaways
Airtel Money's planned London listing represents one of the most significant fintech IPOs to emerge from Africa in recent years and reflects the growing value investors place on mobile financial services. Mobile money has evolved beyond simple peer-to-peer transfers into a broader financial ecosystem offering merchant payments, remittances, savings, lending and other digital services to millions of users, particularly in markets where traditional banking remains underdeveloped. Separating Airtel Money from the telecom business could allow investors to value the fast-growing fintech operation independently, potentially narrowing the discount often applied to diversified telecommunications groups. The choice of London also provides a boost to the exchange as it competes for international listings, while giving Airtel access to a deep pool of global institutional capital. For Africa's technology sector, the IPO will serve as an important benchmark for fintech valuations and investor appetite, particularly as public markets reopen to high-growth companies after several years of subdued listing activity. A successful flotation could encourage other African fintech companies to pursue public listings and further strengthen confidence in the continent's digital financial services industry.
