BRVM Gains 3.29% in September as Sonatel Drives Market Higher

Daba Finance/BRVM Gains 3.29% In September as Sonatel Drives Market Higher
AFRICAN STOCKS AND FINANCEOctober 6, 2026 at 11:01 AM UTC

TLDR

  • BRVM Composite rose by 3.29% to 548.38 points in September, showing overall market gains.
  • Sonatel was a significant performer, with a 22.95% increase in September to XOF 45,000.
  • Bridge Bank Group Côte d’Ivoire debuted on September 24 with an IPO success rate of about 142%, closing at XOF 7,255.

The BRVM ended September higher, with gains in large stocks offsetting declines across most of the market. The BRVM Composite rose 3.29% to 548.38 points from 530.92 at the end of August. The BRVM 30 gained 3.99% to 266.08 points, while the BRVM Prestige increased 4.66% to 203.79 points. Equity market capitalization rose by about XOF 1.03 trillion during the month to XOF 21.50 trillion.

The month was volatile. The Composite started September at 537.25 points and reached 555.48 on September 11 before falling to 531.63 on September 24. It then recovered during the final sessions. The rise in the main indices came despite weak market breadth. Of 47 stocks tracked over the month, 34 declined, 12 gained and 1 was unchanged, showing that the index advance was concentrated in a small group of companies.

Sonatel was the main driver, gaining 22.95% during September to XOF 45,000 from XOF 36,600. BICI Côte d’Ivoire rose 9.05% to XOF 32,605, while Africa Global Logistics Côte d’Ivoire gained 7.68% to XOF 3,015. Société Générale Côte d’Ivoire, Orange Côte d’Ivoire and Ecobank Côte d’Ivoire also finished higher. NEI-CEDA posted the biggest decline, falling 23.08%, followed by SAFCA at 22.12% and Sucrivoire at 21.79%.

September also brought a new listing. Bridge Bank Group Côte d’Ivoire began trading on September 24 after an initial public offering of 10 million shares at XOF 6,750 each. Demand reached XOF 95.8 billion against XOF 67.5 billion offered, giving the deal a subscription rate of about 142%. A total of 17,544 investors participated. The stock closed its first session at XOF 7,255, valuing the bank at about XOF 362.75 billion.

The month showed how the BRVM’s market-cap weighted indices can rise even when most stocks fall. Gains in companies such as Sonatel and other large-cap names had more influence on the benchmarks than losses among smaller stocks. The listing of Bridge Bank also added another company to the market as equity capitalization moved above XOF 21.5 trillion.

Key Takeaways

September’s 3.29% gain in the BRVM Composite gives a stronger headline than the underlying market breadth suggests. More than 70% of the stocks tracked during the month fell, yet the main index still advanced because performance was concentrated in companies with larger market values and heavier index weights. Sonatel was the clearest example. Its 22.95% monthly gain meant a move in one of the BRVM’s largest companies had a larger effect on the Composite than declines across many smaller stocks. That concentration matters for investors because an index gain does not mean the average BRVM stock performed well. Bridge Bank’s listing adds another factor. Its IPO attracted XOF 95.8 billion of demand for XOF 67.5 billion of shares and drew more than 17,500 investors from over 45 countries, showing demand for new equity offerings in the regional market. The stock also rose above its XOF 6,750 offer price on its first day. The deal does not explain the full XOF 1.03 trillion increase in market capitalization during September, but the admission of 50 million Bridge Bank shares added a new company worth more than XOF 360 billion at its first closing price. For the BRVM, the combination of new listings and higher prices in large companies can push market capitalization higher even when most listed stocks are falling. That makes market breadth, index concentration and new admissions important alongside the Composite when assessing the direction of the regional exchange.
