Key Takeaways
The weekly decline comes after a large 2026 rally and shows a widening gap between the headline index and the broader market. The BRVM Composite ended 2025 at 345.75 points, meaning it is still up about 60% this year despite the latest pullback. Equity market capitalization has also risen from XOF 13.33 trillion at the end of 2025 to more than XOF 21 trillion. (BRVM) This week, however, 36 of 47 traded stocks declined, while gains in companies such as Sonatel helped limit the fall in the main index. Sonatel alone represented almost one-third of market turnover and gained 7.42%, showing how a few large stocks can affect both index performance and trading value. The jump in volume also needs context: the number of shares traded more than tripled, but transaction value rose only 25.40%, indicating that much of the additional activity occurred in lower-priced securities. The suspension of 3 companies adds another issue for investors because regular financial disclosure is needed for price discovery. After a gain of about 60% this year, the market is entering a stage where company earnings, dividends, disclosure and valuations may play a larger role than broad buying momentum.
