BRVM Extends Gains as Banking Stocks Lead Market Higher

Daba Finance/BRVM Extends Gains as Banking Stocks Lead Market Higher
BREAKING NEWSJuly 25, 2026 at 4:42 PM UTC

TLDR

  • BRVM Composite Index rose 1.21% to reach 484.32 points, with banking shares leading advances.
  • Equity market capitalization increased to XOF 18.66 trillion, signaling continued investor confidence.
  • Strong corporate earnings, especially from financial institutions, are boosting investor confidence and driving market momentum.

West Africa's regional stock market extended its gains during the week ended July 24, with banking shares leading advances as investor demand pushed the BRVM Composite Index to another record high.

The BRVM Composite Index rose 1.21% to 484.32 points, while the BRVM 30 Index gained 1.33% to 230.73 points. The BRVM Principal Index delivered the strongest performance among the major benchmarks, advancing 1.52%, while the BRVM Prestige Index added 1.18%. Equity market capitalization increased to XOF 18.66 trillion, reflecting continued investor confidence across the regional exchange.

Trading volumes climbed 4.68% from the previous week to 17.56 million shares, although the value of transactions declined 36.36% to XOF 7.69 billion. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) was the week's most actively traded stock, accounting for 14.26% of total market turnover with XOF 1.10 billion in traded value. Société Générale Côte d'Ivoire and SONATEL also ranked among the market's most actively traded securities.

Market breadth remained positive, with 31 stocks advancing, 15 declining and one unchanged. BIIC Benin led weekly gainers, rising 20.87% after reporting a 35% increase in first-quarter net banking income and a 48% jump in net profit. SAFCA Côte d'Ivoire gained 10.59% as investors awaited the listing of newly issued shares following its capital increase, while ETI advanced 7.35%. On the downside, SETAO Côte d'Ivoire fell 8.79%, ERIUM Côte d'Ivoire lost 6.25% and TotalEnergies Marketing Senegal declined 6.13%. In fixed income, bond market capitalization edged down 0.18% to XOF 13.01 trillion, with trading dominated by Senegal's 6.75% 2025–2032 sovereign bond issue.

Key Takeaways

The BRVM continues to demonstrate resilience despite a mixed global investment environment, with banking stocks once again driving gains across the regional exchange. Strong corporate earnings, particularly from financial institutions, are reinforcing investor confidence and helping sustain the market's upward momentum. While trading values eased during the week, higher trading volumes suggest investor participation remains healthy, pointing to continued liquidity in key blue-chip names. Banks have benefited from stronger profitability, higher interest rates and expanding lending activity, making them among the most attractive sectors on the exchange. The contrast between rising equity market capitalization and a modest decline in the bond market also reflects investors' continued preference for equities as companies deliver solid financial results. Going forward, market performance will likely depend on the pace of corporate earnings releases, dividend distributions and macroeconomic conditions across the WAEMU region. If current earnings momentum continues, the BRVM could remain one of Africa's strongest-performing equity markets through the second half of 2026.
