GTCO Reports Nine-Month Profit Decline Amid Rising Costs
TLDR
- Guaranty Trust Holding Company reported a 12.2 percent drop in net profit for the nine months to September.
- The decline was driven by a 27.7 percent surge in interest expense and higher operating costs.
- The company completed a secondary listing on the London Stock Exchange in July.
Guaranty Trust Holding Company reported a 12.2 percent decline in net profit for the nine months ending September. The financial services group issued its unaudited accounts on Tuesday, revealing the drop compared to the same period last year. This decrease in earnings was primarily due to mounting operational costs.
The company saw an improvement in interest income, a primary revenue source, but faced increased pressure from a significant jump in interest expense. Interest expense rose 27.7 percent year-on-year, reaching 27.6 percent of interest income, up from 22.6 percent a year ago. Consequently, net interest income, which represents the difference between interest earned and paid, fell to N935.9 billion from N952.1 billion.
Beyond interest costs, the group's depreciation and amortisation expenses surged by 41 percent to N82.5 billion, driven by increased property equipment depreciation. Other operating expenses also rose by 6.5 percent to N228.8 billion, further eroding profitability. Other income declined 12.9 percent to N74.8 billion, impacted by unrealised fair value losses on financial instruments and weaker foreign exchange revaluation gains. Profit before tax decreased to N879.9 billion from N900.8 billion, while income tax spending surged 31.9 percent, leading to a profit after tax of N614.6 billion, down from N699.6 billion.
The decline in net profit highlights the impact of escalating costs on GTCO's earnings, despite growth in its core interest income. The significant increase in interest expense and operational costs indicates a challenging operating environment for the banking group. For investors, these results suggest pressure on profitability, although the company's stock has seen a 37.9 percent increase so far this year, indicating broader market confidence or anticipation of future performance.
In July, Guaranty Trust Holding Company completed a secondary listing of its shares on the main market of the London Stock Exchange. This move replaced its previous method of trading through global depositary receipts, offering direct access for international investors. The listing aimed to enhance the company's visibility and liquidity in global capital markets.
