BREAKING NEWSOctober 8, 2026 at 5:32 PM UTC

TLDR

  • J.P. Morgan plans to establish a merchant bank in Nigeria by the end of 2026.
  • The move aims to deepen its presence and strengthen links with Nigerian businesses and capital markets.
  • This aligns with Nigeria's financial reforms to attract international investment and improve market liquidity.

J.P. Morgan plans to establish a merchant bank in Nigeria, with operations targeted to commence before the end of 2026. The launch remains subject to regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Dapo Olagunji, Managing Director of J.P. Morgan West Africa, announced the plan at the Nigeria–Asia Financial Connectivity Dialogue in Singapore. The Central Bank of Nigeria convened the dialogue in partnership with J.P. Morgan, Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), and FMDQ Group.

The proposed merchant bank aims to deepen J.P. Morgan’s presence in Nigeria. It would also strengthen the financial institution’s links with Nigerian businesses and the country’s capital markets. This development aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s efforts to attract greater international participation in Nigeria’s financial markets. The CBN also seeks to build stronger connections between domestic and global capital.

This proposed entry follows earlier reports in April 2025 that J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. was preparing to convert its Lagos representative office into a fully operational business branch. The firm reportedly planned to apply for a merchant banking license from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Nigeria was first admitted into J.P. Morgan’s Government Bond Index in October 2012, but was removed from the Government Bond Index–Emerging Markets (GBI-EM) in 2015 due to concerns over foreign-exchange market accessibility and liquidity.

The move could strengthen the range of financial services available to Nigerian businesses and investors. This is particularly significant as Nigeria pursues reforms aimed at improving market liquidity and strengthening investor confidence. Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso stated that Nigeria’s financial-sector reforms are laying the foundation for deeper, more liquid, and internationally connected markets. He added that reforms to the foreign exchange market are designed to remove distortions, improve transparency, and strengthen confidence among market participants.

Governor Cardoso emphasized that credible monetary policy, stronger governance, improved market functioning, and predictable rules are necessary to attract long-term domestic and international capital. He also noted that stabilizing the financial system is a foundation for increasing institutional participation and strengthening connections with international markets. The announcement was part of the Governor’s engagements in Singapore ahead of the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok. A panel at the dialogue discussed Nigeria’s reform trajectory, capital formation, and foreign exchange market confidence.

Key Takeaways

J.P. Morgan's plan to launch a merchant bank in Nigeria by 2026 signals a significant shift in the country's financial landscape, reflecting ongoing efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to re-establish investor confidence and attract international capital. This move comes nearly 11 years after Nigeria's removal from J.P. Morgan’s Government Bond Index–Emerging Markets (GBI-EM) in 2015, a decision driven by concerns over foreign-exchange market accessibility and liquidity. The proposed merchant bank is expected to deepen J.P. Morgan’s presence and strengthen its links with Nigerian businesses and capital markets, aligning with the CBN's broader agenda to foster deeper, more liquid, and internationally connected markets. CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso has highlighted that current financial-sector reforms, particularly those in the foreign exchange market, are designed to remove distortions, improve transparency, and strengthen confidence among market participants. By emphasizing credible monetary policy, stronger governance, improved market functioning, and predictable rules, Nigeria aims to create an environment conducive to attracting long-term domestic and international investment. This strategic re-entry by a major global financial institution like J.P. Morgan underscores a renewed optimism in Nigeria's economic trajectory and the potential for its financial markets to regain prominence on the global stage, provided the ongoing reforms yield sustained stability and improved market conditions.
