Nigerian cross-border fintech LemFi has rebuilt its application and launched a new global brand. The company is expanding its services beyond remittances to include savings, credit, and eSIM connectivity. LemFi was founded in 2021 by Ridwan Olalere and Rian Cochran.
The company has introduced savings and credit services in the United Kingdom, with plans to expand these offerings to other markets. It also launched eSIM connectivity, enabling customers to purchase mobile data in over 100 destinations without needing to change SIM cards or incur roaming charges. To facilitate this expansion, LemFi re-architected its app to integrate multiple products across various countries within a single user account. A new brand platform, "Ambition has no passport," will be rolled out across its global markets.
LemFi currently serves more than 2 million customers, allowing them to send money to over 30 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and other regions. The fintech processes approximately US$2 billion in transactions each month. To date, LemFi has raised over US$85 million from investors. These investors include Highland Europe, Left Lane Capital, Palm Drive Capital, Endeavor Catalyst, and Y Combinator.
This strategic expansion matters for investors as LemFi diversifies its product portfolio beyond its core remittance business. The move aims to address the broader financial needs of its customer base, who often manage financial affairs across multiple countries. By offering savings, credit, and eSIM services, LemFi seeks to deepen customer engagement and potentially open new revenue streams. This approach reflects a recognition that customers build lives and businesses across borders, requiring a more integrated financial system.
Co-founder Ridwan Olalere stated that while sending money home was the initial challenge, the more complex issues arise after the transfer. He highlighted that the traditional financial system often treats individuals as if their financial presence is limited to one location. LemFi has rebuilt its platform to better align with the cross-border realities of its users' lives. The company plans to introduce its new savings and credit services to additional markets following the UK launch.
