Kenyan internet service provider Mawingu has raised $20 million in Series C funding to expand its rural network coverage and bring affordable internet to underserved communities.

The round was led by Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Managers, a private equity fund focused on African infrastructure investments. Mawingu is Kenya’s largest WiFi provider dedicated to rural and peri-urban areas, operating on a mission to bridge the digital divide through affordable, reliable connectivity.

Founded with a focus on both financial sustainability and social impact, Mawingu has attracted long-term infrastructure investors. The new capital will help the company accelerate its rollout across Kenya, advancing its goal of providing meaningful internet access to one million East Africans by 2028.

“Raising capital in today’s environment is no small feat,” said Farouk Ramji, CEO of Mawingu. “This Series C is a celebration of our people, our partners, and the belief that connectivity transforms lives.”

Key Takeaways

Mawingu’s $20 million raise marks one of the largest recent funding rounds in Africa’s connectivity sector, underscoring renewed investor interest in digital infrastructure for underserved regions. Despite economic headwinds, infrastructure-focused investors are backing scalable ISPs that combine commercial viability with measurable social impact. Internet penetration in rural Kenya remains below 40%, leaving millions excluded from the digital economy. By expanding affordable broadband access, Mawingu aims to unlock opportunities in education, commerce, and financial inclusion. Pembani Remgro’s participation signals growing confidence in Africa’s connectivity value chain as a catalyst for development. The investment also aligns with regional digital transformation goals, where bridging the rural connectivity gap is central to inclusive growth. Mawingu’s success could serve as a model for hybrid-impact infrastructure investing—delivering both returns and tangible improvements in digital equity across East Africa.
