TLDR

  • Namibia's Communications Regulatory Authority orders Starlink, owned by Elon Musk's SpaceX, to halt operations immediately due to lack of telecommunications license.
  • Public warned against purchasing or using Starlink equipment/services in Namibia as unauthorized, with authorities confiscating illegal terminals and filing criminal cases.
  • Starlink prohibited from importing/using terminals until license approval; services in Namibia expected to start in 2025.

Namibia’s Communications Regulatory Authority has ordered Starlink, owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, to immediately cease operations in the country due to a lack of the required telecommunications license. The authority warned the public against purchasing or using Starlink equipment or services, deeming such activities illegal.

Authorities have already confiscated illegal Starlink terminals and filed criminal cases with the Namibian police. Demand for Starlink services has surged in sub-Saharan Africa, where traditional broadband providers often struggle to deliver reliable internet, especially in remote areas.

Starlink, which has submitted a license application under review, is prohibited from importing and using its terminals until approval is granted. According to SpaceX’s website, Starlink services in Namibia are slated to begin in 2025.
