Nigerian Equities Market Declines Amid Banking Sector Sell-Off

ngx floor
BREAKING NEWSOctober 7, 2026 at 8:48 AM UTC

TLDR

  • Nigerian equities market fell 0.16% on Tuesday, extending its downward run.
  • Selling pressure on banking stocks drove the decline, with the NGX Banking Index dropping 1.25%.
  • Trading activity weakened significantly, though the market retains strong year-to-date gains in other sectors.

Nigeria's equities market extended its downward trend on Tuesday, as renewed selling pressure on banking stocks pulled the benchmark index lower. The NGX All-Share Index fell 0.16 percent to close at 250,273.50 points, reducing the market capitalization to N163.81 trillion. This decline was largely driven by losses in financial stocks, with the NGX Banking Index recording a 1.25 percent fall, making it the worst-performing sector for the day.

The significant drop in the banking sector saw First HoldCo lead the sell-off, with its shares declining by 5.09 percent. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) also experienced a notable fall of 2.72 percent, while Stanbic IBTC declined by 1.36 percent. Beyond banking, Axa Mansard Insurance and Cornerstone Insurance came under pressure, falling 3.07 percent and 2.97 percent respectively, underscoring a broader weakness across financial-services stocks.

Despite the benchmark index decline, market breadth improved slightly to 0.89x, with 33 stocks advancing against 37 decliners. Trading activity, however, weakened considerably, as volume traded fell 33.83 percent to 579.17 million shares. The number of deals also declined by 24.93 percent to 39,811, and market turnover decreased by 11.77 percent to N36.06 billion.

The market's year-to-date gains remain heavily concentrated in specific sectors, with oil and gas and industrial stocks being the strongest performers. The NGX Oil & Gas Index has surged 133.81 percent year-to-date, significantly outperforming the broader NGX-ASI's 60.83 percent return. Similarly, the Industrial Goods Index has risen 83.93 percent, while the Banking Index, despite recent pressure, is still up 75.08 percent year-to-date.

Access Holdings emerged as the most actively traded stock by volume, accounting for 192.58 million shares, followed by United Bank for Africa with 32.75 million shares. By value, Aradel Holdings dominated trading with N7.63 billion worth of shares exchanged. The combination of falling prices, reduced turnover, and heavy selling in banking stocks suggests a more cautious trading session, even as the market maintains a strong year-to-date performance.

Key Takeaways

The Nigerian equities market experienced a cautious trading session marked by a decline in its benchmark index and significant selling pressure on banking stocks. Despite the NGX All-Share Index's impressive 60.83 percent year-to-date gain, Tuesday's session highlighted an increasing unevenness in sectoral returns. The NGX Banking Index, while still up 75.08 percent year-to-date, was the worst-performing sector on the day, indicating a shift in investor sentiment or profit-taking. This contrasts sharply with the robust performance of the oil and gas and industrial goods sectors, which have seen year-to-date gains of 133.81 percent and 83.93 percent respectively. The decline in overall market activity, with trading volume falling 33.83 percent and turnover down 11.77 percent, suggests a broader cautious approach from investors. The market breadth, while slightly improved, still showed more decliners than advancers, reinforcing the narrative of selective investment. This scenario underscores the importance for investors to look beyond headline index figures and delve into sectoral performance, as market dynamics are increasingly driven by specific industry trends rather than broad-based rallies. The sustained weakness in the insurance sector, down 8.06 percent year-to-date, further illustrates the divergent fortunes within the Nigerian equities landscape, urging a nuanced investment strategy.
