TLDR

  • South Sudan’s government has ordered internet service providers to block access to social media platforms for up to 90 days
  • That follows violent protests sparked by the killing of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan’s El Gezira state
  • MTN South Sudan and Zain have confirmed they will comply with the directive, which affects platforms like Facebook and TikTok

South Sudan’s government has ordered internet service providers to block access to social media platforms for up to 90 days following violent protests sparked by the killing of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan’s El Gezira state.

The block, effective from January 22, was announced by Napoleon Adok Gai, director general of the National Communication Authority. The unrest began after videos of the alleged killings circulated on social media, prompting riots and revenge attacks in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, and other cities.

At least 16 Sudanese nationals were killed, and shops and homes owned by Sudanese citizens were looted and vandalized, according to police. MTN South Sudan and Zain have confirmed they will comply with the directive, which affects platforms like Facebook and TikTok.

Key Takeaways

The social media block highlights South Sudan’s struggle to manage unrest fueled by online content. The government attributes the violence to social media posts, underscoring the platforms’ influence in escalating tensions. Critics, including artists like Mc Lumoex, have called for diplomatic engagement with Sudan to prevent further violence, rather than restricting online access. The situation raises questions about balancing free expression with security concerns in fragile states. This incident also reflects broader issues of cross-border tensions and the volatile relationship between South Sudan and Sudan, with the ongoing conflict in Sudan posing risks to regional stability.
