Starlink sees subscriber growth less than one year in Kenya
TLDR
- Starlink's launch in Kenya in July 2023 saw a more than 10x increase in users within months.
- The number of satellite internet users in Kenya grew from 405 before the launch to 4,808 by March 2024.
- Starlink's high speed of over 100 Mbps has attracted customers without access to traditional broadband providers.
Less than a year after Starlink launched in Kenya in July 2023, the number of satellite internet users has increased more than 10x, indicating a rapid adoption of Elon Musk's internet service.
Before the launch, the country had only 405 satellite internet users; this number grew to 1,354 two months after Starlink’s arrival and surged to 4,808 by March 2024, according to data from Kenya’s ICT watchdog, the Communications Authority (CA).
Starlink’s high speeds of over 100 megabits per second (Mbps) have driven the growth in satellite internet use. These services are particularly appealing to customers not served by traditional broadband providers like Safaricom and Telkom Kenya.
Key Takeaways
Starlink is reportedly intensifying its efforts to offer direct-to-cell connectivity, enabling mobile phone connectivity anywhere on Earth. In tandem with this initiative, Starlink is also expanding its presence in Africa. Several African countries, including Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Ghana, have now approved Starlink's services after initially banning them, imposing strict sanctions, and even arresting a politician's son. Internet penetration in Africa lags behind the global average. According to Statista, as of April 2024, regions such as Western, Eastern, and Middle Africa have lower internet penetration rates compared to other parts of the world. Starlink aims to address this issue by providing high-speed internet connectivity to even the most remote areas, thereby enhancing internet access across the continent.
