YC-backed fintech Bujeti raises $2m in seed round
Nigerian fintech startup, Bujeti, has secured $2 million seed funding in a round led by Y Combinator (YC). Other notable investors participating in this funding round include Entrée Capital, Voltron Capital, UnpopularVC, Kima Ventures, and several angel investors.
Founded in 2021 by Cossi Achille Arouko (CEO), with a background in software engineering and previous experience leading initiatives at Paystack, and Samy Chiba (COO), Bujeti aims to streamline financial management for African businesses. The platform is a comprehensive solution, integrating all necessary components for businesses to handle their finances and operations seamlessly.
With the newly secured investment, Bujeti intends to expedite its growth, expand its market share, and diversify its product offerings. The fintech startup is specifically focused on introducing credit lines for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and creating new products tailored to the unique needs of enterprises.
Key Takeaways
Across Africa, merchant acquisition is proving to be the "new" scramble for digital payment and other digital services on the continent. Offline and informal merchants exist all over Africa and account for up to 90% of businesses on the continent. Even as tens of millions of Africans have come online in the past decade, most merchants in Nigeria still run their businesses offline—from managing money to keeping track of inventory, business records, staff, and suppliers. These manual processes can be time-consuming and error-prone. As such, there’s a significantly large market of African businesses waiting to be tapped by technology startups. Bujeti is just one of many that provide a suite of services that enable small business owners to incorporate digital tools in day-to-day operations. Similar providers include Bumpa, Pastel, Bamba, OZÉ, and Kippa.
