Best Ways for Diaspora Investors to Fund an NGX Account

Once you’ve opened an NGX brokerage account as a diaspora or foreign investor, the next practical question is how to actually get money into it.

Here are the common approaches, along with what to check before choosing one.

International wire transfer: The most standard method, sending funds directly from your home bank account to your broker’s designated Nigerian bank account (or a correspondent account, depending on the broker’s setup). This is generally reliable but can involve wire fees on both ends and sometimes multi-day processing, so it’s worth initiating well ahead of any subscription deadline, not on the last day.

Broker or platform-specific funding tools: Some brokers and diaspora-focused investment platforms have built their own funding rails, for example, linking to international payment processors or offering their own currency conversion, specifically to make onboarding easier for non-resident clients. These can be faster or cheaper than a traditional wire, but availability and terms vary by provider, so ask directly rather than assuming.

Mobile money and fintech transfer apps: Whether services like M-Pesa or MoMo, or broader remittance apps, can fund an NGX account directly depends entirely on your specific broker’s setup, some fintech-forward brokers support this, others don’t, and there’s no universal standard yet.

Whichever method you use, keep proper documentation of the transfer, this matters both for your broker’s compliance requirements and, as covered separately, for supporting any future repatriation of returns, since Nigerian foreign exchange rules generally expect investment inflows to be properly documented (often via a Certificate of Capital Importation) at the time they’re brought in.

Before an official Dangote IPO subscription window opens, it’s worth testing your chosen funding method with a smaller transaction if possible, confirming transfer times, fees, and any documentation your broker requires, so you’re not troubleshooting a new funding process for the first time during a short subscription window.
