Can the Nigerian Diaspora Invest in the Dangote IPO Without a BVN?

A Bank Verification Number (BVN) is a biometric identification number tied to Nigerian bank accounts, and it’s a common requirement for opening Nigerian brokerage and bank accounts domestically. For diaspora Nigerians without a BVN, a natural question is whether that blocks participation in an NGX offer like the planned Dangote IPO.

The honest, general answer: it depends on the broker and the specific account type, and it isn’t a uniform rule across all of NGX. Some Nigerian stockbrokers offer non-resident Nigerian (NRN) or foreign investor accounts specifically designed for diaspora clients who don’t hold a Nigerian bank account or BVN, using alternative KYC documentation such as an international passport, proof of foreign address, and sometimes a reference from an existing bank abroad. Other brokers may still require a BVN, particularly if you’re opening the account in a way that’s linked to Nigerian banking rails.

Because this varies meaningfully by broker, the only reliable way to know your specific options is to contact NGX-licensed stockbrokers directly and ask how they handle diaspora clients without a BVN, before assuming either that you’re excluded or that it’s automatically not required. Some brokers actively market diaspora-friendly account opening specifically because they’ve built a process around this gap.

As of this writing, Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s IPO hasn’t been priced or opened for subscription, and no Dangote-specific account requirements have been published, so any claims you see about specific BVN requirements for the Dangote IPO should be treated as general broker policy, not Dangote-specific confirmed rules, until an official prospectus says otherwise.

If you’re diaspora and don’t currently hold a BVN, the productive step now is researching NRN-friendly brokers and confirming their documentation requirements directly, so you’re not caught out by a BVN requirement once the subscription window opens.
